Elderly cat trappers avoid trial in Prairie City

PRAIRIE CITY (AP) — An elderly couple accused of trapping their neighbor’s cat can avoid a trial if they write a letter of apology and pay a $177 veterinary bill.

But Vera and Dorrance ‘‘Smokey’’ Wilborn don’t seem ready to perform either task, the East Oregonian newspaper reported. The Wilborns say cats have long been a nuisance in their Prairie City neighborhood. To deal with the problem, they set a trap in their carport last spring.

The cat’s owner, Tina Willet, called Oregon State Police on May 28 to report that she had to rescue her cat named ‘‘Spook.’’ She said Spook hadn’t returned that night, so she went searching until she heard cries coming from the Wilborns’ carport. Unable to open the trap, Willet took the cat and the device back home. The Wilborns were charged with theft of a companion animal. The case was headed to trial this month before District Attorney Ryan Joslin of Grant County had the case dismissed by the justice of the peace.

" Tina and Rod Willet need to back off! These poor elderly couple cannot even mind their own business in the privacy of their own home because their neighbors will not respect their rights! Why should they apologize for trying to protect their property -- much less be arrested, fingerprinted, etc -- it's outrageous! So that people who have no respect for anyone else can let their cats poop all over the world? Where is the justice here? People like Tina Willet don't want to clean a litter box so people like Vera Wilborn get threatened with jail time? Cat owners, have some respect for your neighbors and your cats! Amazing but true fact: not everyone wants to have YOUR pet crawling in their carport! For God's sake quit being so selfish and lazy and irresponsible, keep your cat INSIDE WITH YOU ITS OWNER WHERE IT BELONGS and let their poor people live out their remaining days in peace instead of getting plagued by ridiculous dramas by people like you who don't care properly for their own property! LOL, oh man, that is priceless. I want a bumper sticker that says that.

I love people who get on here and talk the talk knowing that they couldn't take a single step in the direction of their words if push came to shove. "

This applies to those on both sides of the fence. Pet owners need to spay and neuter their animals. Everyone needs to support their local animal shelters. "

" I have a long driveway which, for a cat, goes only one way, because if I spot one coming down it, it will never return from hence it came.

Cats eat songbirds and I would rather hear and see them than some stupid, disgusting, feces-pawing, territorial- pissing useless animal.

This cat trapping martyr should be vindicated and placed upon a pedestal. Songs of praise should be bestowed upon him.

The good people of the good fight against cats should rally, rejoice and regale this saint! "

" The fact that is reportable news is just mindblowing. Is there nothing else going on that we have to report on people trapping cats. Wow.

Since it is here though, I will agree with just about everyone. Living in a home that I love with a yard that I have worked hard to develop, nothing bothers me more than cats using my flowerbeds as litter boxes. I myself have pondered trapping the locals and removing the problem...... my dog unfortunatly won't take care of the problem for me.

If you have cats, keep them inside or otherwise on your own property. "

" I am very proud of my mother Vera Wilborn and my stepdad Dale Wilborn! For standing up for their rights and protecting their property as best they can. Unlike other areas in the state, we are a rural community and do not have humane shelters to take these animals to. So we deal with them as best we can. However there is no way that my mother or stepdad would ever poison an animal for any reason. I also know that they have worked very hard throughout their lives to buy and have a home they can be very proud of. This is their property, this is not public property that can be used by other neighbors animals for a feces dumping ground. Over the years they have been very proud and protective of their flower gardens and vegetable gardens. To reach into the soil and grab a handful of cat feces or to track this into their home is not something they or anyone should have to deal with. And quite frankly, Tina Willet you are very fortunate that this happen with my mother and stepdad, for I would have immediately pressed charges against you for trespassing and theft of private property. For this is the only physical evidence, that is in this case. The cat in the trap is your word only. And by your own submission, knowing where the sensors are makes me wonder how much time you spent in casing their house and carport before invading their property as a common criminal. Sneaking around like a peeping Tom. Or perhaps as a cat burglar. I am ashamed of you and anyone else who would agree with you that these old people do not have a right to protect or to have a say in their own property rights. By the way, your cat is still invading their property buy a litterbox and keep your cat at home. "

Thats Dan for you. He'll hammer down on the small guys, but runs away with his tail between his legs from the criminals. "

" In the past 15 years, I have lost count on how many animals I have had to either relocate so they would never find their way back, or dispose of. They pee on everything, chew up your outdoor patio cushions, and just make a mess in general.

People who own pets, especially cats, they just let them roam free and onto other people's property, and then when something like this happens they have the nerve to complain about it? HEY, WAKE UP!! For one, it's just an animal, and two you weren't taking care of it and keeping it fenced off or in the home, so what happens off your property is free game.

And then, they want to sue or press criminal charges and our courts and tax money gets tied up in a stupid, pointless matter, while the real criminals are getting away with murder...literally.

Maybe she should keep her cat indoors next time. She's lucky that they just trapped it, because if that was my carport, there wouldn't have been a trap. There would of been a shell casing on the ground and the cat would of been already disposed of. "

" Petlover, I agree with you if it were all about trapping unwanted animals or ferals, but there is alittle more to the story the paper left out..I won't try to defend myself because people are going by what the article conveys and not what actually happened. Not that everything written is untrue, but much more drama added and pertinent information left out.The history these people have that made the DA want to press charges. What is ironic is that I never even called the police to begin with! Word of mouth got the law involved who took the trap from me! Article made me out to be a crazy cat loving, elderly picking on, idiot. Do not believe everything you read especially from an article from a newspaper desperate to sell papers..We had a homicide in August and a doctor's well water was poisened by people mad at him and these stories got less exposure in the paper. It doesn't make sense to me.. Lets all worry and write about things that really matter in life
and not get caught up in small town gossip that unfortunately got in the paper! "

" To Tina
I have to agree with the Wilborn's on trapping unwanted animals. I live in an area where unwanted cats run wild and are a major problem. I feel a responsible pet owner needs to have their pets spayed and neutered. I have seen animals starve to death becuase of being dumped. I have cats and dogs but I make sure my pets stay home. "

" I believe the person has every right to kill an unwanted animal on their property. And why should it matter if they were elderly or not? Its people like you who dont understand that cats pee on everything and make a pretty smelly mess. Most people wouldnt want them on their property If you "cat people" love your cats so much, how about you keep them on your property. When a person owns a dog, they have to fence them in. What makes your cat so special to run loose. I personally hate cats and would get rid of the entire species if I could. If it would have been on my porch, I would have shot the damn thing and let it crawl home wounded. I own a dog that is trained to take care of the cat problem in my area. It will be a cold day in hell when I apologize to someone because my dog killed their trespassing pet. "

Regardless of whether these people are elderly or not, they have no business doing this. I think they cruel and sadistic and they finally got caught! They are not the victims in this! "
