Area officials to discuss stimulus projects today

ONTARIO — A follow-up meeting to discuss what projects or needs are in Malheur County that could be promoted for funding under an economic stimulus package expected to be passed by Congress shortly after Jan. 1 will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Malheur County Economic Development Office, 316 NE. Goodfellow St.

Communities must have established a list of projects by the time the opportunity to request funding becomes available, according to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Oregon, who has been traveling around Eastern Oregon to make sure the rural counties and communities are prepared.

Addressing a group Thursday at the Ontario Train Depot, Wyden said the projects must be ready to go, must produce immediate jobs and/or must have a long-term benefit.

Ideas for projects have already been suggested at a similar session at County Court Wednesday and during the meeting with Wyden on Thursday.

“We can’t forget our airport,” Alan Daniels, Ontario airport manager and economic development director said.

While the underpass on Idaho Avenue is a top priority with some, Chuck Mickelson, Ontario Public Works director, said North Oregon Street, from Idaho Avenue to the North Ontario Interchange, would be his No. 1 priority because it is a major entryway into the city. Jay Chamberlin, manager of the Owyhee Irrigation district, said the Owyhee Project is more than 75 years old and some major repairs are needed.

Dr. Dennis Carter, superintendent of the Ontario School District, presented a floor plan of a science building that would have classrooms and labs for high school students and mentioned there were some needed roof maintenance projects in the district during the session at County Court.

Janine Weeks, Nyssa School assistant superintendent, also mentioned roof maintenance and security issues.

Asked who would be making up the final list of projects to promote, state Rep. Cliff Bentz, R-Ontario, who has also been promoting the economic discussion, said the county, through the economic development director, is the logical starting point, which is why he approached Jim Jensen, economic development director about hosting the meeting. One issue he believes needs to be considered is “how to keep what we already have.”

“County, city leaders and businesses need to work together to decide on which of the priorities they all want to get behind,” Bentz said. “There is a short time frame.”

" Ray,
That's what is so frightening about our current situation. The inbred socialist one world shareholders of the Federal Reserve know exactly what they've done and what they're doing now. Give all the sheeple everything they could ever possibly want and more...then, take it all away. Obama is their savior, the new FDR. If people would only study our past history they would be truly frightened too. Think about this:
The New Deal, which for all intent and purposes is what Obama is proposing and our local bureaucrats are embracing did not save us from the first GD. It was the cause of what should be known as FDR's 25 year long depression. FDR's Depression, was ended by WWII that basically scared people back into production.

The cause of WWII was, as Henry Ford so eloquently put it: private bankers' monopoly on money (Federal Reserve). He recognized that bankers intentionally start most (he said, "all") wars to make money. He was exactly right.

The Great Depression never fully ended, as New Deal programs are still devastating our economy today, in part causing the much, much larger and deeper problems that we see unfolding now.

The Republic is strong brothers and sisters.
The way back will bring pain and sorrow,
but take heart !!! WE THE PEOPLE are
the answer, not handouts from the government.
Our destiny is a chosen path, choose wisely.....

We have seen many conflicts in the world, only God knows the time, the place and hour.
For us, the time of tears begins, the few know of what I speak.

Soon, the sheep will awaken and become the wolves....Truth. "

" Mike. Maybe the folk are paying attention, but there are so many now on the receiving end of the handouts and wages that they can’t protest without it potentially reducing their own income, or it bringing on the wrath of their supervisors or fellow employees who are cheering and working for more, more, and more from the government.

For every million people you get to go to Washington to protest them giving away money, two million will show up asking for more. And who do you think the politicians will listen to? 2 million vs. 1 million, hmmmm!

There will be no resolution until revolution, which will occur after the collapse of our currency, which seems inevitable to me as we are beyond the power curve and we’re going to crash. The only question is, when will the impact take place? (a little flight lingo) I invite all readers of this blog to google IOUSA, and watch the thirty minute version of the you tube video at that site. It does a good job of explaining the pickle we’re in. "

" To Here Here:
That kind of mentality is exactly what the socialists want. Don't you realize that the only way to end this madness of piling trillions upon trillions of debt upon your children and grandchildren is to simply say "no thanks".
Please realize that if just one third of one percent of the population of America was to get upset enough with the blatant fraud, theft, Racketeering and Ponzi Finance that has literally decimated the economic structure of our nation, American households and our future (not to mention our children) and were to show up in Washington DC in peaceful protest, occupying The Mall, Constitution Avenue and surrounding areas and refused to leave until every one of these charlatans resigned in disgrace or committed seppuku on national TV the protesters would number one million.

Such a mass of people would be literally impossible to refuse to answer to. That we have not yet seen it simply means that the population of this nation either doesn't care that it is being systematically looted, is too full of Prozac to pay attention to the racketeering and theft or is simply not paying attention. (My vote, by the way, goes to the latter - at least for now.)

The anger steeps, and there will come a time, not too distant, when some of the "sheep" turn into wolves. Truth. "

" It may be a bunch of crapola..... but we are gonna have to pay for it anyway. You can't say don't do it. If the feds do it, its done. I say if they are going to do something like this we would be stupid to not ask for our piece of the pie. I would rather have my tax dollars pay for some improvements around here, rather than for improvements and jobs somewhere else. "

" Until the feds cut grants completely, why NOT accept them? If we don't, some other community will. The concern I have is many of them require matching funding from their recipients. Another concern like others have is the fact the government is broke and what country are we borrowing this "grant" money from? "

" I love this. What a bunch of crapola. When will the taxpaying public wake up and realize that all of these handouts are coming out of your pocket? Despite what Washington wants you to believe, there is no "free lunch". We as taxpayers will be paying for all of this spending for generations to come. Sure, it sounds good for a little town like ours to get a "piece of the pie", but in the long run, will it be worth it? We will be spending our children and grandchildren's future. In effect we are sentencing them to a life of debt slavery to the government. Don't do it. "

We NEED TO FUND EDUCTION wrote on Dec 22, 2008 3:03 PM:

" One can not help but begin to think that Ontario as a whole just doesn't care about Educating it's youth when even a bond to simply repair damaged buildings and bring them into the modern age gets shot down.

It seems to me there must be one or two driving forces behind the continual failure of the School Bond: Either Ontario's residential base is too old and decrepit (and obviously their kids are out of the schools so they don't care) or Ontario's residents are too stupid to recognize the many benefits a school bond provides to a community.

You see, folks, it works like this: You invest in education, and the kids in the schools recognize that Education is important. They take more pride in their community and treat the community with appreciation for investing in them and their futures.

Or, you continue to fail to invest in Education, and you continue to see a decline in the quality of humans coming out of your education system (not the teachers' faults, they are doing great all things considered)... blame yourself as this continues to happen, as you apparently are the ones who are too damn selfish to support the kids around here!

And don't give me that "I don't support the administration" garbage. You also have the power to make changes to that if you get involved. "
