Ontario girls get win at buzzer

WEISER—Only 3.7 seconds remained on the clock with the score tied at 41, and Ontario had the ball out of bounds.

In stepped Crystal Lopez, who caught the ball near the top of the key, made a move and continued to deposit an 8-foot jump shot as time expired to give the Ontario girls basketball team a 43-41 non-conference win over the Wolverines Tuesday night in Weiser.

In the final eight minutes of play, the two teams battled back and forth to the tune of 11 lead changes. Six of those changes came in the final three minutes of play.

To start the game, the Tigers (1-2) jumped out to an 8-0 lead, before the Wolverines (3-4) battled back to tie the game 8-8 after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Weiser outscored the visitors 10-6, for an 18-14 lead at the half.

During third quarter, not much changed, and Ontario was again outscored. The Wolverines led the two teams into the final stanza with a 29-27 lead.

Overall, the Tigers were led by Kim Boyd’s 12 points, followed by Jenny Yano’s nine.

Weiser was led by Ana Overgaard with 14 points, and Mary Lancaster added 10.

Ontario travels to the Pendleton Tournament Friday and Saturday, while Weiser hosts Vale, Friday.

La Grande 50, Nyssa 32

LA GRANDE

All the shots that weren’t falling for the La Grande girls Saturday in Fruitland were falling Tuesday at home.

Brittani Good hit 10 field goals for 22 points, and JoHanna Pettey added 16 points to lead the Tigers to a 50-32 blowout victory over Nyssa Tuesday.

The biggest difference was the third quarter, as La Grande broke open a 25-19 lead with an 18-2 run on the way to a  lopsided win.

Nyssa made good on 10 field goals in the game and was led by Victoria Rodriguez with eight points, and Amanda Bittinger followed with seven points and 14 rebounds.

Nyssa (1-1 overall) hosts Parma Thursday.

Jordan Valley 38, Huntington 22

Huntington

Catie Kershner scored 13 points and Kayla Cuvelier and Emma Johnson added eight points apiece to lead the Jordan Valley girls basketball team to a 38-22 victory over Huntington Tuesday in High Desert League action in Huntington.

Nickie Naegle had an all-around game with five points, four rebounds and four steals for the Mustangs, and teammate Anne Marie Eiguren chipped in four points and six boards.

Jordan Valley (0-2 overall, 1-0 league) hosts Monument/Dayville Friday.

Payette 47, Nampa Christian 43

NAMPA

The Payette Pirates nearly let a 10 point lead at the half slip through their fingers, but the Payette boys managed to hold on for a 47-43 win over Nampa Christian Tuesday in Nampa.

The Pirates’ defense did a good job in the first half, limiting the Trojans to 11 points on the way to a 21-11 lead at the break.

In the final minutes of the game, the Pirates (4-0) saw a 10-point lead cut down to three points, and the Pirates had to hit some foul shots to seal up the win.

On the night, Payette shot 14-of-29 from the charity stripe. The Pirates were led by Tyler Kuder with 15 points, and Brad Pollock chipped in nine points in the win. The Pirates travel to Marsing, Saturday in a non-conference matchup.

Homedale 57, New Plymouth 56 OT

Homedale

It took overtime to determine the winner of the New Plymouth (1-1) and Homedale boys basketball game Tuesday in Homedale, and when the extra session was done Homedale emerged with a 57-56 victory.

The Pilgrims jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first eight minutes of play and then extended that to 28-20 at halftime.

In the third quarter, however, the Pilgrims came out cold and only scored nine, whereas, the Trojans got hot and tallied 18. Homedale opened the fourth quarter with a 38-37 lead.

New Plymouth, however, rallied with a 14 point effort, but Homedale added 13 to tie things up at 51 at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period, Homedale finished one better, with seven points, to secure the 57-56 win.

Nolan Kirby led the Pilgrims with 19 points, Brett McLees added 14 and Seth Bodas was good for 10 in the overtime thriller.

Homedale’s Austin Emry tallied 17 points and teammate Grant Sweet scored 16.

New Plymouth will host Nyssa at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Nyssa 58, Marsing 42

NYSSA

The Nyssa boys basketball team blasted out of the gates with a 32-point first quarter lead and stretched that out to a 58-42 win over Marsing Tuesday night at home, despite losing steam on the way.

After the amazing 32 points in the opening quarter, Nyssa added only 26 more to the score board in the remainder of the game.

Nyssa committed 24 turnovers in the win, and head coach Gabe Fuentes said the Bulldogs need to clean that part of their game up.

Leading the Bulldogs were Eric Jenson and Cole Froerer each with 14 points, and Jesse Martinez added 11.

Nyssa’s production fell off in the second quarter, and  the Bulldogs only added eight points to their total but still led at the break 40-25. In the third quarter the Bulldogs put up a slim seven points and finished the game with an 11 point fourth quarter.

Nyssa will be in action again at 7:30 p.m. Friday when the Bulldogs travel to New Plymouth.
