Tiger boys pick up win over Weiser

Weiser—The Ontario Tiger boys basketball team improved to 1-1 with a 58-47 win over Weiser, Friday night in Weiser.

Ontario was led by Robert Keyes and Tad Anzaldua each who logged 13 points in the win, while Josh Mejia added 11 points and Kyle Nicholson was good for 10 points.

Weiser’s top producer was Trent Winegar with nine points and Austin Winegar added eight.

Ontario opened up a 17-11 lead in the first quarter of action despite being without the services of its head coach and Jake Turner, who were suspended for one game due to technicals they recieved following the Tigers loss to Burns on Tuesday.

Keyes, Mejia and Nicholson all scored four points in the opening quarter to put the Tigers in front.

Weiser picked up its scoring pace in the second quarter with 15 points, but Ontario matched them point for point and took a 32-26 lead into the lockerroom.

In the second half of play, the Tigers outscored Weiser 26-21. Ontario added 14 in the third quarter and 12 in the final quarter.

For the game, Ontario made 14 2-point shots, five treys — Anzaldua led the team with three  from downtown — and made 11-of-21 from the freethrow line. For Weiser, 12 2-pointers were made, two longballs drained and the Wolverines shot 17-of-22 on freethrows.

In Tuesday’s 55-51 loss to Burns, the Tigers started the game slowly, only scoring six points in the opening quarter while Burns tallied 13 points.

Trailing by seven to start the second quarter, the Tigers outscored the Hilanders 15-11 to get within three points at the half, trailing 24-21. Both teams scored 11 points in the third and in the fourth, Ontario out scored Burns 19-17, and when the horn sounded the score was 53-51 Burns.

Then came the technicals, and Burns hit 3-of-4  freethrows for the final score of 55-51.

Anzaldua led the Tigers with 17 points and Salvador Sanchez added 11 points.

Ontario and Weiser will square off again at 7:30 Tuesday in Ontario.

Burley 66, Fruitland 60

Burley

On paper, the game was a wash, but on the scoreboard, it was a six-point difference between Fruitland, the defending 3A state champs, and Burley, the defending 4A state champs, with Burley winning 66-60.

“It was a fast-paced game,” Fruitland head coach Mike Fitch said. “I had to use my bench extensivley and they responded well.”

Matt Stanger led the Grizzlies with 24 points as he drained nine shots from the field, hit a trey and went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. But Burley also had a big gun in Kyle Hepworth who lit up Fruitland to the tune of 36 points which included 10 from the field and four from downtown. Hepworth was also perfect from the line with 4-of-4 made.

Ty Pena found foul trouble early, but did not foul out of the contest as he finished the game with  13 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.

Fruitland committed only four turnovers in the game and Burley committed eight.

Fruitland will get a shot at redemption on Feb. 7 when Burley completes the home-at-home schedule.

The Grizzlies will host Columbia (1-1) at 7:30 Tuesday.

Baker 48, Weiser 44

Weiser

The Wolverines were looking to rebound from a close loss to Ontario on Friday night with a win over the visiting Bulldogs from Baker, but Baker had other plans as they held off a second half run by Weiser for the 48-44 win.

Leading the Wolverines was Gavin Eisenbarth with 14 points and Trent Winegar pitched in 10.

Weiser will be in action at 7:30 p.m. against Ontario, Tuesday in Ontario.

Cole Valley 56, Vale 53

VALE

Cole Valley Christian High School built up a 39-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter and held off a late Vale charge to hold on for the 56-53 victory Saturday in Vale.

 Jordan Skyles scored 20 points and Brandon Feil added seven points, 14 rebounds and eight assists, to lead Cole Valley, who made good on 20 field goals.

Vale made 23 field goals and went 3-of-9 from the stripe with Russell Seals leading the way with 15 points and 13 boards.

Alex Miller followed up Seals’ effort with 10 points and teammates Scotty Browen and Adam Snook chipped in eight points apiece.

Vale (0-2 overall) hosts Weiser Friday.

Girls hoops

Cole Valley 45, Vale 33

VALE

In two days, both losses, the Vale girls basketball team relinquished victory from the clutches of its palms at the free throw line.

The Vikings connected on 11-of-38 free throws in their losses, first, a 47-40 loss Friday against Weiser and Saturday, a 45-33 loss to Cole Valley Christian.

Friday against Weiser, the Vikings were down 23-16 at the half and came out with a 16-9 run in the third quarter to even the score at 32-32 entering the final stanza. Weiser came out on top with a 15-8 spurt in the final eight minutes of play.

Vale’s Amy DeLong led all scorers with 14 points and teammate Amanda Browen added 10 points. Weiser was led by Liz Richins, who scored 13 points and Ana Overgaard chipped in 10 points.

Saturday, DeLong and Shelby Mooney scored eight points apiece, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings were defeated by Cole Valley Christian, 45-33.

Vale made good on 12 field goals, but at the line went a paltry 7-of-22. The game was tied at 7-7 after one quarter, before the Chargers broke it open the rest of the way on a 38-26 run.

Vale (0-2 overall) hosts Fruitland, Tuesday.

Parma 54, Payette 27

PARMA

Parma’s Kali Roche and Breanna Stell combined for 34 points, to lead the Parma girls basketball team to a 54-27 win over Payette, Saturday in Parma.

Roche led all scorers with 20 points, while Stell hit four 3-pointers to help her gain 14 points, and the Parma win.

Payette was able to keep the game close throughout the first quarter, as Parma led 19-11, but the Pirates (1-6 overall) went ice cold in the second and third quarters, scoring only five points during that stretch, all in the second quarter.

“We couldn’t hit anything,” Payette head coach John Kowatsch said. “We had some really good looks, and nothing fell. We missed a lot of gimmie shots, nothing would go in.”

The Pirates  were led offensively by Hailey Gross with 10 points, while teammate Hailey Schmidt chipped in with eight points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Pirates play host to Nampa Christian, Tuesday in nonconference action, while Parma plays host to Nyssa, Thursday.
