Nyssa loses hard fought overtime battle to Baker

BAKER —Through two games, the short-handed Nyssa Bulldogs have taken some progressive steps.

Even in defeat, Thursday evening was another building block.

Nyssa battled 4A Baker for four quarters and an overtime session, with Baker taking the 65-58 victory over Nyssa Thursday in Baker.

“I was really impressed with this group,” Nyssa head coach Gabe Fuentes said. “Like I told these boys, there has been improvement in our first two games. It’s kind of exciting for us to play well with this small group. I have been impressed with those six guys.”

Eric Jensen scored 20 points and grabbed nine boards and Cole Froerer chipped in 15 points to lead Nyssa, who as a team, dropped 23 field goals and went 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Nyssa led after one quarter 12-10 and outscored Baker 16-12 in the second quarter for the 28-22 halftime cushion.

Baker crept to within a 38-34 deficit heading into the final stanza and went on a 15-11 run to force the extra session.

In the overtime, Nyssa faced an uphill battle with Jesse Martinez and Jensen fouling out. Baker took advantage, using a 16-9 spurt to pull away late.

Miguel Trinidad scored 11 points, Carter Spear added six points and Javier Trinidad dished out five assists.  Nyssa (0-2 overall) hosts Marsing Tuesday.

Homedale      47

Parma      36

PARMA

The Parma Panther boys basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season Thursday night with a 47-36 non-conference loss against the visiting Homedale Trojans.

Parma battled tough in the first half, keeping the game close.

At the end of the first quarter, Homedale led 13-10, and by the break the score was 24-21 Homedale.

It was the second half that did the Panthers in. Homedale outscored Parma 23-15 for the final margin of victory. Parma’s Nathan Nielsen led the Panthers with 15 points.

“They scored 14 or 16 points off turnovers,” Parma head coach Nate Tessmer said. “That’s way to many. We played hard and we rebounded well. We just have to do a better job of taking care of the basketball.”

Parma will travel to Weiser Thursday to try and get in the winners column.

Tri-Valley      80

Notus      53

Cambridge

The boys from Tri-Valley (Cambridge-Midvale-Indian Valley co-op) are starting out their season with a bang.

The Titans under new Head Coach Barret Morris, unleashed a dominate performance over Notus on Tuesday with a 80-53 win.

Jake Doggett led the Titans with 23 points, six assists, four boards and three steals, scoring 11 of his game-high 23 points in the opening stanza.

While the offense was humming early on, the Titan defense held the Pirates to nine points in the period and cruised the rest of the way.

 Seniors Ross Branch, Joe Pickett and Brandon Fry had all-around performances in the blowout victory with Branch scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds along with three steals and three assists.

Pickett chipped in 12 points, five steals and four assists and Fry added five boards, four steals, three assists to go along with his three points.

Girls basketball

Payette      46

Cole Valley Christian      30

MERIDIAN

Hailey Gross scored 10 points and added four steals and Shelbi King scored eight points to lead the Payette girls basketball team to its first victory of the season, a 46-30 drubbing over Cole Valley Christian Thursday in Meridian.

In the game, Payette outscored Cole Valley in every quarter of play and had eight different players hit the scoresheet.

Payette jumped out early with a 16-9 first quarter spurt and outscored Cole Valley 9-6 in the second quarter to take a 25-15 halftime lead.

The Pirates kept the momentum going in the second half with a 21-16 run and never allowed the Chargers to creep any closer than a double-digit deficit.

Hailey Schmidt chipped in eight points and nine boards, while point guard Cass Gross had an all-around game with five points, four assists and three steals.

“In the fourth quarter, we had a lot of younger kids getting experience which was huge,” Kowatsch said. “Everybody was able to contribute. Nobody had a bad game.”

Payette (1-5 overall) travels to Parma Saturday.
