Lady Bulldogs pick up win

Nyssa — In her first varsity start, Nyssa freshman Marisa Gonzalez made her presence known.

Gonzalez scored four points, grabbed seven rebounds and added four steals and two assists to lead the Nyssa girls basketball team to a 43-36 win over Marsing, Tuesday in Nyssa.

“My freshman point guard Marisa Gonzalez had some first game jitters, but she did great for us,” Nyssa head coach Danny Pratt said. “She is only going to get better from here. When it is all said and done, she is going to be real good.”

In the second half, the Bulldogs turned the tide. Nyssa overcame a 23-18 halftime deficit with a 25-13 second-half run to cruise to the win. Marsing committed 35 turnovers and was outrebounded by a 55-39 margin in the loss, with Nyssa’s Amanda Bittinger leading the way with 15 boards.

Bittinger also added a team-leading 18 points, Vicky Rodriguez chipped in seven points and Karina Armenta tallied four for the Bulldogs, who connected on 11 field goals and went 17-of-32 from the free throw line. Nyssa (1-0 overall) travels to La Grande Tuesday.

PAYETTE

The New Plymouth girls basketball team (5-0) picked up another win, this time at the expense of Payette (0-5), when they beat the Lady Pirates 52-36 Tuesday.

Payette head coach John Kowatsch said his team made a few mistakes in the loss.

New Plymouth was led by Lauren Burnside with 14 points, and Sienna Edmunson added 10. For Payette, Shelbi King tickled the twine for 14 points.

The game was tied at eight after the end of the opening quarter, and then the Pilgrims exploded for 17 points in the second to lead 25-16 at the break. New Plymouth added 15 more in the third and 12 in the fourth, while Payette scored nine in the third and 11 in the fourth.

Payette will travel to Cole Valley Thursday, and New Plymouth will travel to Homedale on Friday.
