Also, Payette boys take down Parma

FRUITLAND — Ty Pena scored 15 points and Devin Decroo added 14 to lead Fruitland to a 53-48 victory over La Grande in nonconference boys basketball action Tuesday in Fruitland.

In the first half, the Grizzlies stormed to a 24-14 lead, and the Tigers used a 17-11 surge in the third quarter to creep to within a 35-31 deficit heading into the final stanza.

Fruitland overcame a 3-for-9 shooting effort from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and outscored La Grande 18-17 to provide the final margin.

“La Grande is a quality team, and we played well,” Fruitland head coach Mike Fitch said. “I was very happy for our first game out. We shot and defended well.”

Matt Stanger added 11 points and a team-leading six boards, and Hans Dahle added six points for the Grizzlies, who, as a team, connected on 23-of-51 shots and shot 8-of-22 from the free throw line.

Fruitland (1-0 overall) travels to Burley, Saturday.

The Payette boys basketball team traveled to Parma Tuesday and came away with a 43-30 win.

Kyler Kuder led the Pirates with 16 points, while Brad White chipped in 11.

The game was contested tightly through the first quarter of play, with Payette leading 13-12. By the break, the Pirates led 23-21. In the third quarter, Payette outscored the Panthers 10-5 and led 33- 26.

Then in the fourth quarter, the Pirates (1-0) added 10 more to Parma’s (0-1) four for the final margin of victory.

“I am pleased with the defensive effort in the second half,” Payette head coach Shawn Scow said. “The returning starters did a good job. We were pretty balanced in scoring. We worked together. The chemistry is good with these seniors.”

Parma head coach Nate Tessmer attributed the loss to their 29 turnovers.

Thursday, Payette will play host Vale, and Parma will travel to Homedale.

" Who is showboating? No one on Fruitland's team likes to be in the spotlight especially that Stanger kid he is one of the most humble and kind young man I know, and a very talented athlete to boot. He is very self conscious and struggles with his self esteem and always thinks about others first. Fruitland would be sad to loose him. All the players make a team not just one guy and lucky for the Grizzlies they play like a team! Always looking out for each other and it is not about themselves but the team as a whole and they do believe in who they are and what they can accomplish! Go Grizzlies! Good luck this season we all believe in you too!! "

" Fruitland was very fortunate to win this game. LaGrande is a solid team and any win against them is a good win. I'm very impressed with that boy they call Hans. He is a real team player, you won't see a bunch of showboating from him. I think he has the talent and heighth to go places. Good luck the rest of the season.

Congrats to Adrian on your win over Greenleaf, as well. I expect the Antelopes to win the state championship for their division. Keep an eye on that team. "

" Too bad no one thought the grizzly boys would do very well and the press wasn't there to see Matt Stanger's Dunk! Good Job Grizzlies We can't wait to watch the rest of the season -we do believe in all of you! "
