Fruitland defenders Nick Varriale (20), Dillon Stringfield (4) and Orlen Payne (rear) hit Buhl receiver JD Leckenby after a pass attempt, jarring the ball loose. The ball landed on top of the players and Kyle Smith (24) grabbed the ball accounting for one of five Fruitland intercpetions on the night as Fruitland went on the win the game 21-7. |
BUHL —Fruitland head football coach Bruce Schlaich knew coming into the game that Buhl would go to the air against the Grizzly defense.
He wasn’t disappointed.
Buhl put up 28 passes on the night. Fifteen of those passes were caught, but six went down in the books as interceptions as Fruitland scraped out a 21-7 defensive victory in the Idaho 3A state football semifinals at Buhl.
It was the first time Fruitland had been held under 30 points in game since Sept. 12, when the Grizzlies, 11-0, defeated 4A Columbia, 21-0.
The Grizzlies will make their third consecutive trip to the Idaho 3A state championship game Friday at Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium. Game time has not been announced.
Fruitland set the tone early.
After kicking off to Buhl and holding the Indians to a three-and-out, Nick Varriale bounced off the right side of Fruitland’s line on the Grizzlies’ first play from scrimmage and scampered 57 yards untouched to the end zone. Reed Johnson’s kick gave Fruitland an early 7-0 lead with 10:42 left in the first quarter.
Five minutes later, Fruitland chalked up its first interception of the game when Tommy Macfarlane stepped in front of Buhl’s Kurran Kelly to steal Cader Owen’s pass and return it 70 yards to the end zone. Fruitland, however, was called for holding on the play, which brought the ball back across midfield.
Fruitland still capitalized on the turnover. Just two minutes after the interception, Zach Fabricius found running room on the left side, then cut through Buhl’s secondary for a 35-yard touchdown run. A successful kick from Johnson made it 14-0 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.
That’s when both defenses dug in.
Fruitland was unable to move the ball in the second quarter and started several possessions inside their own 20-yard line. Even though the Grizzlies gave up good field position, the Grizzly defense stopped the Indians time after time inside the Fruitland 30.
“Our defense came up time and time again,” Schlaich said. “We got them at their house and that’s saying something.”
Fruitland’s defense included two more interceptions — both by Varriale — in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies also gave up a fumble in the second quarter, negating a potential Fruitland drive.
Fruitland took the kick to start the second half, but Buhl’s defense again proved formidable, stopping the Grizzlies on three plays and forcing Fruitland to punt on its first two possessions. On the second possession, Buhl returned the punt to the Fruitland 14 with just 5:13 remaining in the third.
Once again, though, Fruitland dug in on defense and held the Indians on downs.
Kyle Smith picked up his first interception on the night late in the third quarter. In a rather bizarre play, Fruitland’s Varriale, Dillon Stringfield and Orlen Payne converged on Buhl receiver JD Leckenby just as the pass reached Leckenby’s hands. All three defenders hit Leckenby, knocking the ball loose, but the pigskin fell on top of players and Smith picked the ball up, which had not hit the ground, for the interception.
Fruitland used the turnover to its advantage, putting together a sustained drive and finishing when Stringfield bounced off the left side of the Fruitland line from two yards out for a 21-0 lead.
Buhl’s only touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter when Eric Sengvanhpheng dove over the top of Fruitland’s defense from 1-yard out.
Buhl attempted to rally with an on-side kick and recovered the ball at Fruitland’s 47, but Smith chalked up his second pick of the night with 6:28 left to play at the Fruitland 5-yard line.
Buhl had one possession left, but could not convert on fourth-and-eight and Fruitland ran out the clock.
Fruitland did allow Buhl 164 yards through the air, but the Grizzly defense held the Indian running game to under 30 yards on the night.
Fruitland, meanwhile, ground out nearly 300 yards rushing. The Grizzlies did complete one pass on the night, but attempted less than five tosses in all.
“In a game like this you don’t want to take chances,” Schlaich said following the contest. “I didn’t want to pass very much.”
