Fruitland’s defense logs six picks in win
Grizzlies keep Indians scoreless through three quarters

Larry Hurrle | Argus Observer Fruitland defenders Nick Varriale (20), Dillon Stringfield (4) and Orlen Payne (rear) hit Buhl receiver JD Leckenby after a pass attempt, jarring the ball loose. The ball landed on top of the players and Kyle Smith (24) grabbed the ball accounting for one of five Fruitland intercpetions on the night as Fruitland went on the win the game 21-7.
BUHL —Fruitland head football coach Bruce Schlaich knew coming into the game that Buhl would go to the air against the Grizzly defense.

He wasn’t disappointed.

Buhl put up 28 passes on the night. Fifteen of those passes were caught, but six went down in the books as interceptions as Fruitland scraped out a 21-7 defensive victory in the Idaho 3A state football semifinals at Buhl.

It was the first time Fruitland had been held under 30 points in game since Sept. 12, when the Grizzlies, 11-0, defeated 4A Columbia, 21-0.

The Grizzlies will make their third consecutive trip to the Idaho 3A state championship game Friday at Boise State University’s Bronco Stadium. Game time has not been announced.

Fruitland set the tone early.

After kicking off to Buhl and holding the Indians to a three-and-out, Nick Varriale bounced off the right side of Fruitland’s line on the Grizzlies’ first play from scrimmage and scampered 57 yards untouched to the end zone. Reed Johnson’s kick gave Fruitland an early 7-0 lead with 10:42 left in the first quarter.

Five minutes later, Fruitland chalked up its first interception of the game when Tommy Macfarlane stepped in front of Buhl’s Kurran Kelly to steal Cader Owen’s pass and return it 70 yards to the end zone. Fruitland, however, was called for holding on the play, which brought the ball back across midfield.

Fruitland still capitalized on the turnover. Just two minutes after the interception, Zach Fabricius found running room on the left side, then cut through Buhl’s secondary for a 35-yard touchdown run. A successful kick from Johnson made it 14-0 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.

That’s when both defenses dug in.

Fruitland was unable to move the ball in the second quarter and started several possessions inside their own 20-yard line. Even though the Grizzlies gave up good field position, the Grizzly defense stopped the Indians time after time inside the Fruitland 30.

“Our defense came up time and time again,” Schlaich said. “We got them at their house and that’s saying something.”

Fruitland’s defense included two more interceptions — both by Varriale — in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies also gave up a fumble in the second quarter, negating a potential Fruitland drive.

Fruitland took the kick to start the second half, but Buhl’s defense again proved formidable, stopping the Grizzlies on three plays and forcing Fruitland to punt on its first two possessions. On the second possession, Buhl returned the punt to the Fruitland 14 with just 5:13 remaining in the third.

Once again, though, Fruitland dug in on defense and held the Indians on downs.

Kyle Smith picked up his first interception on the night late in the third quarter. In a rather bizarre play, Fruitland’s Varriale, Dillon Stringfield and Orlen Payne converged on Buhl receiver JD Leckenby just as the pass reached Leckenby’s hands. All three defenders hit Leckenby, knocking the ball loose, but the pigskin fell on top of players and Smith picked the ball up, which had not hit the ground, for the interception.

Fruitland used the turnover to its advantage, putting together a sustained drive and finishing when Stringfield bounced off the left side of the Fruitland line from two yards out for a 21-0  lead.

Buhl’s only touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter when Eric Sengvanhpheng dove over the top of Fruitland’s defense from 1-yard out.

Buhl attempted to rally with an on-side kick and recovered the ball at Fruitland’s 47, but Smith chalked up his second pick of the night with 6:28 left to play at the Fruitland 5-yard line.

Buhl had one possession left, but could not convert on fourth-and-eight and Fruitland ran out the clock.

Fruitland did allow Buhl 164 yards through the air, but the Grizzly defense held the Indian running game to under 30 yards on the night.

Fruitland, meanwhile, ground out nearly 300 yards rushing. The Grizzlies did complete one pass on the night, but attempted less than five tosses in all.

“In a game like this you don’t want to take chances,” Schlaich said following the contest. “I didn’t want to pass very much.”

" They had a great season, but next year coach Schlaich needs to add a passing attack. heck he should have them throw 40% of the time. Also play some better teams in the non conference. Even if it means traveling a long ways it would be worth it. Why because the rest of the teams in the srv are no were near the level of the grizz's competition. "

" People have been saying that Nyssa and Vale won't play Fruitland, but didn't Vale play the boys basketball team, and didn't Nyssa play their baseball team last year? Maybe this topic is only meant to cover football, but if they all hate Fruitland's AD then why would they schedule them at all? Is there some reasoning I'm missing here? "

" It wont get worked out...FHS people are to proud to admit they are wrong.

And are you kidding about Vale and Nyssa? 05 & 06 State champs and 05 & 07 Runner Up. These schools have had just as much if not more success than Fruitland. Yes FHS probably would have won but they would have been close games to teach the FHS boys how to work through adversity. Something they didn't know about with Shelley and Salmon. Those two eastern team understood it and that is why they beat the "almighty" FHS...Get over yourselves and stop acting like you were champs the past 2 years. Because you weren't. "

" Lifeways is just down the street from you!!! I think you need it big time. I can't speak for Nyssa and Vale why they are not playing Fruitland in football. But really...The last few years Fruitland would destroy both teams! Sorry..But most observers who haven't been drinking the kool-aid would agree. Last year Fruitland and Ontario would have been a good match up. I think this issue has been gone over before FORMER FAN. Let go and take a very very deep breath. Fruitland football will make it without Ontario, Nyssa and Vale on the football schedule. Likewise with the Oregon schools. If something can get worked out. It would be great for everyone. I think it is time for HOOPS! "

" Congrats to all the teams that made the playoffs, and hope to see all teams in the area back in the mix next year.

Now, as a friend and I were discussing, we need one more game, before the season officially ends. We need an allstar game, putting Ont,Nyssa and Vale VS Fruitland, Payette and Weiser.

Proceeds from the gate could be split between the booster clubs or better yet, the FD's from each of the towns playing, as their the the only organazations that actually get along, and work together, dispite having the river between us. Someone get on the phone and make this happen. "

I can tell you why to...How about Schliagh being a baby at parma when Vale kicked his butt??? Or when Ontario got robbed??? Tell us your "point of view" "

Another Former Fan wrote on Nov 27, 2008 1:16 PM:

" The problem is they have no competition around here and the competition that they could have they offended. Nyssa, Vale, and Ontario will not play FHS. Those 3 teams are also at the top in our area but they wont play FHS. The East is far more better than the west in Idaho. Look at the past 15-20 years. I think only 1 or 2 teams from the west have won it. They need to play better teams to get ready for the East. FHS needs to ask forgiveness from the Oregon schools so they can be ready to win it all again. But FHS is to proud and pompous to do that. Get over your pride and treat the other teams in the area with respect then FHS will be more ready for the East. More and more sports teams from VHS, OHS, and NHS are refusing to play FHS. I would say its their problem but they are more than happy to play each other. So where does the problem lay...FHS's AD and other admin!!!! "

" OK! So the Grizzlies were defeated in the State Championship game. Come back next year and try it again! We're reminded at how many times Abraham Lincoln failed in politics before he won the presidency. Thomas Edison had more failures than successes. I believe Babe Ruth struck out more than twice the number of times that he homered (I'll have to do my research on that). Point is, the Grizzlies failed to win the Championship, but they're not losers. Losers are people who give up without making any attempt to go after their lives' goals

Hey, not to change the subject (ok, I'm changing the subject), but if people in this area were as passionate about things like . . . academics, music, etc. as they are about sports, then we could really make a name for ourselves. I know they could sure use it in Ontario.

There's another group of winners at Fruitland High School, and that is a group of kids led by Joel Williams. Next time you see the Grizzly Band, stand and cheer. They deserve it every bit as much as anything else I can think of. "

Old Jock wrote on Nov 25, 2008 4:40 PM:

" You can say what you want, there's no denying that those Fruitland kids are warriors. Games like the 3A Championship remind us all that it is just that--a game. Somebody gets to win and somebody else has to lose. I've never seen a team that wanted it more than the 2008 Grizzlies. And as far as them being cocky or overly confident, that is what comes with hard preparation and experience. They've had more than their share of both. I've watched most of those kids since they were 7th graders, and we all knew then that they'd end up playing in this state championship game. It just didn't turn out the way we hoped. Yes, Fruitland is sorely disappointed. Those of us from area towns had best be on the alert, because you know that once they lick their wounds, those Grizzly basketball players are going to emerge with a powerful need for revenge. Sometimes a chip on the shoulder can be a real motivation. "

" I didn't say anything about the players. I even said good luck next year. I was talking about the Gomers that got on here and spouted off about how there was no team in the world that could stand up to them. Writing that Salmon would only score against the 3rd string and that Fruitland would beat them by 40 + points is boorish arrogance that needs to be pointed out. I haven't seen anyone from Parma on here saying those types of things and they won state in 2 sports! All I mentioned was that maybe the volume knob on the pride setting needs to be turned down a few notches. That's how you win friends and influence people. "

re wow post wrote on Nov 25, 2008 5:50 AM:

" Are you an adult? I know that the kids get carried away, that comes from all the towns around. It is sad that when a team has a good run, that people they play regular season try to tear them down. Heck, I know for a fact that the town of Fruitland was happy and would have cheered on Payette and Weiser till the end. So wow, maybe look a little deeper in your self and turn that negative energy into something positive instead of jealousy. "

" You don't get to the state championship on luck. You don't beat Shelley on luck. And you don't get a shot at the Fruitland Grizzlies on luck. Mark my words, this will not be a blowout. Salmon has seen the tapes, they've been practicing in sub-freezing weather, and they are coming to town to play serious football. "

Fruitland's passing game will be 1-3 for 6 yards.

Salmon will finally get a TD in the 4th against the 3rd team defense but Tyson will block the PAT.

Final 49-6 Grizz. "

" Isn't 66-0 good enough for you? Gee whiz, it was the 8th grade defense that gave up the 22 points a couple of games ago, I think the 1st teamers will be just fine against Salmon. And it does not matter in the least that we are unable the move the ball via the pass. When we can break off 9 yards every time we run, I'd rather not see the ball in the air. Orange Black, get a life, you are probably just a jealous OHS fan trying to stir something up on this forum. GO GRIZZ "

Old Jock wrote on Nov 18, 2008 3:10 PM:

" It's exciting to see Salmon making it to the championship game. They are a school with many disadvantages including low,low budget and unbelievably long travel distances for every game they play. Putting Shelley out of the running was a real coup for them. I predict that this will be a different kind of battle for Fruitland, one that is winnable, but not the kind of polished competition they're used to. Should be a great game! "

Think about this sr class, they have only lost 1 game in 3 years, they will be ready!!! Hopefully coach will open the play book a little this time and let them hang it all out. Good luck guys...we are all proud of you!!!! "

One positive is that Crim will be back in the action and that can only help. GO GRIZZ!! Bring home the hardware. "

" The championship game vs. Salmon scares me to death. Our games have become nail biters and I'm afraid we have lost our killer instinct. We should be blowing out these weak sisters in the playoffs. Our winning margins are shrinking faster than my 401k. I hope we can develop a passing attack this week in case we need it like we did last year in the final game. "
