GOLDEN, Colo. – Kayla Mitchell earned Daktronics All-Central Region honors for the Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team.
The first and second team honors were announced Monday as voted on by the sports information directors of the Central Region, which consists of 24 institutions from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Each team consists of three forwards, three midfielders, four defenders and a goalkeeper.
Mitchell garnered first team honors.
Mitchell, a 5-foot, 3-inch junior forward from Ontario High School, is tied for second in the RMAC in game-winning goals (6) and ranks second in goals (22) and points (46).
Mitchell is tied for fourth in the nation in goals, tied for seventh in goals per game (1.1) and is tied for 17th in points per game (2.30).
A preseason All-RMAC selection, Mitchell was named Offensive Player of the Week twice this season.
For her efforts in the classroom, Mitchell was named the 2008 Women’s Soccer Academic Player of the Year and was a unanimous first team Academic All-RMAC selection.
The Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team was one of 48 teams selected by the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Committee to compete in the 2008 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships.
The bid to the NCAA Tournament is the first in the history of the program. The Orediggers (12-5-3) are the fourth seed in the Central Region and will play the fifth seed Minnesota State.
These two teams met earlier this season on Sept. 7 in Arvada, Colo., as Minnesota State defeated CSM 3-2 at Long Lake Ranch Park.
CSM and Minnesota State will play at 1 p.m. Friday at Auraria Field on the campus of Metro State.
The winner will advance to the second round to play host school and No. 1 seed Metro State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
