Rainier rains on Vikings

Argus Observer sports staff

Eugene—Vale’s Russ Seals caught a 6-yard pass from Bryant Haueter for a touchdown during the second quarter,  but it was not enough as Rainier pulled away with a 34-6 win during the first round of the 3A OSAA Championships, Saturday afternoon in Rainier.

“We got some momentum when we scored in the second quarter, we felt we were in good shape at halftime,” Vale head coach Jeff Jacobs said. “I felt they (Rainier) wore us down in the second half.”

The score for the Vikings made it a 14-6 game at the half. Rainier came out in the second half for 20 unanswered points, and the win.

Vale finished with only 151 total yards, with 123 coming via the passing game, all from Haueter. Seals finished with 77 yards receiving, and the Viking offense rushed for 28 yards. Rainier finished with 372 yards on the ground and 400 total yards.

“I don’t think the score indicates how hard we played,” Jacobs said. “It is really hard to put the season into perspective right now. I need a little time to really look at it.”

The loss ends Vale’s season with a mark of 5-5.

" Still nothing???? Your posts are worthless. "

" Still no better plan or explanation of what you are talking about. You are more worthless than the coaches at Vale. Come on and step up. What would you have done better? You just proved that you are so dumb arm chair QB that points fingers easily but has no knowledge to back up your point. Prove your point or don't talk. "

" Was it still a state championship team without Barras, Williams, and Tuckers? "

" Sorry, I saw the team play. The coaches did a great job considering what little they had to work with. They had no size, very little speed and a limited amount of experience. People need to accept that some years are developmental years when you just don't have the horses. It happens to everyone, even the mighty Vale Vikings. Quit making excuses and playing the blame game and be happy that they made the playoffs. Nyssa, Burns and Riverside would have loved to have been in your position. "

" How were they a State Championship team when 3 of their best players weren't able to play due to injuries? It was a weird season for Vale and I don't think it was anybodies fault. Tradition can't overcome Murphy's Law. How are the coaches bad when so many great things have happened the past few years. "

" Lots of criticism but no examples. Fill us in a little bit more on your ideas. I remember one year ago when people were excited about the coaching staff and the great game they put together against Cascade Christian. Now this year you are ready to hang them. So much to say with no examples of how to correct the mistakes you saw. Let the world know what you would do better rather than point fingers. You would have more credibility that way. "

" It's too bad seniors, not to mention the rest of the team, that you didn't have the coaching that you deserved! That team was a state champion team, too bad the coaches didn't coach you to it. Maybe next year for those that are here then... "

Sad for the seniors wrote on Nov 9, 2008 8:12 AM:

" When is Vale going to get coaches that want to win rather then play favorites. I thought it was about the best players getting playing time and not relying on just a few ok players to carry the team. The seniors had a chance to go far this season but because the coaching staff couldn't or wouldn't play the players that could get them there they were set up for defeat. Of course Rainier wore them down in the second half. We always do because our guys have to play the whole game without breaks. With very capable guys standing on the sidelines watching everything fall apart, what is really the reason for not playing them? I hope that Coach Jacobs takes a long look at it and knows that his coaching staff has real problems that need to be fixed. And, that they know that they did no service to those seniors with all that playoff experience under their belts, the season had to end like this. When you get around to getting the season into perspective...make sure you do something about what was wrong and learn from it for next year. This is Vale Football for crying out loud, and I feel like you let the town down along with all your players! "
