Death notices

Jennifer Sue Thomas Brown

Nov. 2, 2008

Cincinnati

Jennifer Sue Thomas Brown, MS, RD, LD, age 45, granddaughter of Barbara and Wendell Carnefix, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at her home, surrounded by her family. She will be laid to rest beside her grandfather at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at Rosedale Memorial Gardens, Payette. Local arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette.

She was proud of the excellence and caring that were the hallmarks of Christ Hospital and its staff. The congestive heart failure floor was where she spent much of her time working with patients on their diets and educating them on how to make healthy choices. To this end, she participated in making an educational video and inventing a game.

Tireless in her efforts for her patients, Jen made sure that interns understood how important it was to ask questions and to know their patients.

Jennifer had completed her master of science degree in nutrition at Texas Woman’s University in Houston, Texas, in 2006, her bachelor of science degree at University of Houston and a bachelor of arts degree at Scripps University, Claremont, Calif.

Born in Seattle, Wash., Jen led a nomadic life as her parents moved with the job to Oregon, New Jersey, Texas, California and England. She had the ability to make the most of each new situation. Attending high school at the American School in London, she loved the opportunity to study drama with the Royal Shakespeare Company and to travel with her school and family, literally, around the world.

Throughout her years of studying, Jen worked at many jobs — lifeguard, fashion consultant at Saks, restaurant manager, entrepreneur, paralegal for her mother in her law office and dietitian, where she found her calling, helping others.

Jennifer will be remembered for her optimistic spirit and her fierce determination to overcome the tough hand she was dealt. From an infant, she had surgery for hydrocephalous and spina bifida and was left with impaired motor ability in her lower body. She was a poster child for the March of Dimes in Oregon. Without complaint, Jennifer worked hard not to be held back in any way. She loved to run, for it made her feel free. When diagnosed with bladder cancer, Jen fought with her usual spirit and grit and designed a diet for going through chemotherapy.

Her family and friends loved her dearly. Her husband of 13 years, Michael, her mother, Christine, and father, John, sister and brother, grandmother, aunts and uncles, niece and nephew and cousins will miss her terribly — her warm smile, enthusiasm, creativity, her sense of style and her concern for others. She was unique, and she left us right in the middle of her life.

Her inspiration will live on at The Christ Hospital in the Jennifer Thomas Brown, MS, RD, LD Memorial Fund. Donations to the fund can be made to Christ Hospital, Development Office, 2139 Auburn Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45219; or online at www.ChristHospitalCincinnati.com/donations.
