Our Opinion: A welcome donation

While it might have raised some eyebrows locally, Wal-Mart did something last week that sends a message the massive retail giant can, indeed, invest in its own community.
Wal-Mart delivered a $50,000 donation to the local Boys & Girls Club effort. The organization plans to open up a new, temporary facility Dec. 1 here.
The Boys & Girls Club will offer tutoring, technology programs, arts and crafts, a game room and physical education for youth locally.
None of those amenities, though, are possible without a considerable amount of money, and that is why the donation from Wal-Mart was so significant.
Fifty thousand dollars is nothing to scoff at and, in fact, is an awful lot of money.
Sure, a retail giant like Wal-Mart can afford it, but that really isn’t the point.
The point is, this giant corporation could have simply ignored the whole Boys & Girls Club effort and done nothing.
Instead, the corporation stepped up and delivered a $50,000 donation.
Any firm or entity should gain credit when it is deserved, and this donation to a great program for our community deserves accolades.
The Boys & Girls Club is also one of those community initiatives that really deserves the support of everyone who cares about the future of this area and its children.
