Our Opinion: Gaining ground

After a slow start, the Snake River Transit service now appears to be gaining momentum and that is nothing but good news for area residents.

The service kicked off in mid-September but did not secure a high number of riders initially.

Not surprisingly, the service gradually began to gain more and more riders as the word spread about the buses, with more than 650 people taking advantage of the service during the first 10 days of the month.

Operating from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. out of the southeast corner of Wal-Mart in Ontario, the Snake River Transit service appears to be on its way to becoming something of a local fixture.

  We sure hope so.

This service is one we’ve supported from the beginning because, despite the up-front investment from the city, it makes sense for our community.

The service, once in place, is flexible enough to provide rides to adults, children, people with disabilities and college students.

What the service really says about the area, however, is there are those who can fashion long-term, ambitious visions to help the community.

The Snake River Transit service is on its way to becoming one of those rare success stories.
