Suicide attempts up in downtown Portland

PORTLAND (AP) — In March, a middle-aged man jumped to his death from a parking garage in downtown Portland.

Six months later, a 38-year-old woman leaped from the same one.

Though such public suicides are rare, they are becoming more common in the area that includes Portland’s high-rise buildings and bridges that cross the Willamette River. Between Jan. 1 and Sept. 20, the Portland Police Bureau’s Central Precinct recorded 61 suicides or attempted suicides, compared with 33 during the same period a year ago.

Driver indicted in quadruple fatality near Pendleton

PENDLETON (AP) — A Umatilla County grand jury has indicted a Carlton man accused of causing a crash near Pendleton that killed three men and a woman.

The jurors Thursday charged 46-year-old John Carlgren with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The Oregon State Police says a pickup driven by Carlgren struck the back on a car on Interstate 84. The driver of the car and his three passengers died at the scene Sunday.

Motorcycle, deer collide near Bly

BLY (AP) — A motorcyclist was seriously injured when his bike hit a deer near the Southern Oregon town of Bly.

The Oregon State Police says 65-year-old Brian Frid of Portland was on Oregon 140 eastbound when the deer sprinted in front of him.

Seaside fined because sewage entered river

SEASIDE (AP) — The state Department of Environmental Quality fined the city of Seaside $10,000 because untreated sewage entered the Necanicum River.

The failure of a monitoring system to alert workers at a Seaside pump station caused 1,000 gallons of effluent to be discharged into the river.

City Manager Mark Winstanley said this week that Seaside would appeal.

The DEQ fined the city of Cannon Beach $1,365 for a discharge of 85,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the ocean July 19.
