NYSSA — Nyssa City Council incumbent Pat Brewer was appointed to fill a vacancy on the elected board and then secured re-election for two, four-year terms.
After taking a four-year break, Brewer hit the campaign trail again to serve another stint on the council.
Now she is seeking another term, she said, in large part to see the new wastewater treatment plant project completed and to help push the city forward.
Brewer’s name is on the November general election ballot along with five other people, seeking one of four open seats on the Nyssa City Council.
Brewer put her name in for the vacant City Council seat after she received encouragement from Chris Childs, who was city manager at the time, and other council members. “I left the first time because of health issues,” she said, adding she returned after she became healthy again.
“I thoroughly enjoy it.” she said. “I’m very excited. I see the mood of the town is good. I’m excited about the new sewer treatment plant. I know a lot of people have worked to get it done.”
The new facility is key to attracting new business and industry, she said.
Brewer and her family moved to Nyssa in 1978 and she worked for U.S., Bank in Nyssa from then until she retired in 1993. She was a member of the former Kiwanis Club of Nyssa and was active on the Nyssa Nite Rodeo Board.
Presently, Brewer is a volunteer at Holy Rosary Medical Center.
Brewer noted there have been many changes in the city since she was first on the City Council. Because of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the City Council meetings were being held in the Public Library meeting room when she was appointed and continued there until an elevator was installed in the old City Hall building, where council meetings are still held on the top floor.
Although she had reservations about it at first, Brewer said she is happy with the new City Hall on Main Street, which now houses city offices, except for the police department.
“It is a real asset,” she said. “I think we have a marvelous city crew.”
Keeping the voters as a main focus is important to Brewer.
“Doing what we can for the best of the community is what it is all about,” Brewer said about serving on the council.
