Born to John Henry Danks and Myrtle Zoe Rayl Danks on June 22, 1920, in Jasper County, she spent her youth in Iowa before moving to sunny California in the early 1940s. While working as a cook at a boarding house in Long Beach, Calif., Virginia met a handsome young man named Kenneth Odoms. Kenny had a car, and a relationship bloomed between the two after Kenny began driving Virginia to and from Hawthorne, Calif., to visit her mother. In 1942, the couple eloped to Las Vegas and three years later welcomed a little girl, Connie Jo, to the family, before moving to Kenny’s hometown of Weiser, Idaho. In 1949, Virginia and Kenny added a second child to the family, Lesley Kenneth.
