Ontario — After a tough non-league schedule, the Ontario Tigers finally kick off Greater Oregon League action against an upstart Baker City program that has upset on its mind.
In a contest where many feel the league championship could be decided, the No. 11 ranked Tigers travel to Baker City for a chance to ruin homecoming night.
Last week, the Tigers defeated Lakeland 45-14, and in the game, they rushed for 298 yards and used three touchdown passes from Tad Anzaldua along with 99 yards rushing from Jake Turner.
The Bulldogs have impressive wins over Parma, Nyssa, Vale and Burns and have suffered setbacks against Weiser and Fruitland.
On the year, Baker City has allowed 101 points, while its offense has scored 165.
“They have a lot of the same players from last year, and they got some varsity experience,” Ontario coach Trever Wilson said. “They have been playing well. They have a balanced attack, where they have a solid running game, a quarterback that can throw and two solid receivers.”
The key for Wilson is to stop Baker City’s quarterback with pressure, which will put him on the run.
“We have to make sure he feels the pressure, where he doesn’t get too comfortable in the pocket,” Wilson said. “In order to stop the run, we have tackle well. Our kids are fast and aggressive, and we can do that as long as well fulfill our assignments.”
The Tiger offense has been moving nicely for Wilson, and offensive coordinator Scott Helmick has used his weapons to perfection.
Now the job will be trying to exploit Baker City’s 4-3 defense.
“We have to keep doing what we have been doing all season,” Wilson said. “All year, we have had good balance. Whether it is Frank Lopez, Jake Turner or Roger Garza, we make it tough for teams to stop just one.”
