Idaho serial escapist sentenced to life in prison

TWIN FALLS (AP) — A man who escaped twice in one night from the Gooding County Jail has been sentenced to life in prison.

Scott Howard Holmes must serve at least 10 years before becoming eligible for parole, a Fifth District judge ordered Tuesday.

Holmes escaped from the facility twice in September 2007.

LEWISTON (AP) — A Catholic Jesuit order says it will fully investigate allegations by a northern Idaho woman who last week filed a lawsuit claiming she was raped by a priest when she was a 7-year-old.

The Society of Jesus, Oregon Province, issued a statement Tuesday in response to the lawsuit filed in 2nd District Court by 41-year-old Kim ‘‘Mia’’ Sonneck, who is asking for damages in an amount exceeding $10,000.

In the statement, Provincial Rev. Patrick Lee says ‘‘The Oregon Province takes these allegations seriously and will investigate them to the fullest extent.’’

Ore: Highly qualified teacher rate hits 92

percent

SALEM (AP) — The number of classes in Oregon public schools taught by highly qualified teachers has climbed a bit but still falls short of the 100 percent goal in the No Child Left Behind Act.

State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo said Wednesday that 92 percent of classes met the standard in 2007-2008. The percentage was 90 for the year before and 91 percent the year before that.

Astoria, Ore., officer

accused of affair on

duty

ASTORIA (AP) — An Astoria police officer accused of having sex with a woman while he was on duty faces misconduct charges.

The State Police say 32-year-old Brian Slotte  was arrested Tuesday on 10 counts of official misconduct, a misdemeanor that carries a year of jail time as a maximum sentence. Local police say he also faces departmental discipline.
