Ontario netters swept by La Grande; Weiser blanks Payette

Ontario — The La Grande volleyball team made quick work of Ontario taking a three-game sweep in Greater Oregon League volleyball action Tuesday in Ontario.

“It was of those days that the girls just didn’t bring what they needed to the court,” Ontario head coach Katie Branch said.

Liz Richins and Ana Overgaard each knocked down six kills on way to a 3-0 win over Payette in a Snake River Valley Conference volleyball match Tuesday in Weiser at Tom Falach Gymnasium.

The Wolverines picked up the sweep 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, in their second-to-last volleyball match of the season, before heading into district tournament action.

The Wolverines (8-4 overall, 4-3 SRV) travel to Homedale, Thursday.

For the Pirates ( 7-5 overall, 4-4 conf.), Codi Webster recorded seven kills and 17 blocks, while Terra Knighten had 16 digs, and Ashley Dillon had 11 assists. Becky Scott also had seven service points.

New Plymouth honored its seniors for many years of hard work, and they responded Tuesday evening with a dramatic 3-2 win over Parma in Western Idaho Conference volleyball action at Pilgrim Pavilion in New Plymouth.

“It just shows this team has the ability to play well against any of the top teams in our conference,” New Plymouth coach Paula Leppert said. “This win is big for us. We came in talking, playing as a team and putting all of the elements together to get this win.”

In fact, the Pilgrims soared to a new level with a pair of wins in the first two games by scores of 25-22 and 25-23 and looked well on their way to an easy win.

Parma rebounded with a 26-24 win in the third game and added a 25-13 decision in the fourth game to send the match into a decisive fifth game.

With the score tied 13-13 in the fifth, New Plymouth senior Lauren Burnside was at the service line with a chance to put her team in front.

Burnside gave the Pilgrims a 14-13 advantage with a service ace, and, on the final point, Burnside served it up for the match.

A rally ensued, and Burnside made a dig, and Michelle Hull was right on the spot for the pass to Sienna Edmunson.

Edmunson snapped down a kill which had no chance for a return, and New Plymouth picked up the win.

Edmunson notched 16 kills and 11 digs, while Adia Campbell added 24 assists, and Burnside tallied five blocks.

For Parma, Kali Roche led with 22 kills, eight blocks and eight digs, while Breanna Stell chipped in 29 assists, seven digs, four kills and a service ace.

Parma (9-4 overall, 5-4 league) hosts Melba Thursday, while New Plymouth (4-10 overall, 2-6 WIC) travels to Cole Valley Thursday.
