Tigers win big on road

Argus Observer sports staff

Rathdrum, Id.—The Ontario Tiger football team hit the road this weekend for a long-distance match up against the Lakeland Hawks in a non-confernce battle.

Lakeland entered the contest with a 1-4 record while the Tigers boasted a 4-1 mark and following a high-octane game in Rathdrum, the Tigers came home with a 45-14 win.

Ontario began the game with a touchdown in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by Frank Lopez for the early 7-0 lead following the point after kick by Jordan Lang.

Lakeland responded early in the second quarter with a score and kick to tie the contest at seven, but then the Tigers exploded with two scores by Jake Turner. The first was a 18 yard pass from Tad Anzaldua and the second a 48-yard pass.

Lakeland tried to make it interesting with a score on the ensuing kick off, but Ontario answered with  Lopez’ second score of the game on a 9-yard run.

Ontario added 13 points in the third quarter for a 39-14 lead and finished the fourth quarter by adding six more points for the final margin of victory.

Lopez led the Tiger ground attack with 108 yards, while Turner pitched in 99 yards in the win.

Anzaldua threw for 194  yard on 11-of-17 passing with three touchdowns.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 5-1 overall and will begin league play at 7 p.m. Friday in Baker City.

" WOW! Sure are a lot of big talkers out there....and several who don't know what they're talking about. It's kind of hard to know when we never REALLY get the whole story though. I wish people would realize that trash talking doesn't get anyone anywhere. Look at Payette Friday night! There was a TON of trash talk going around and Fruiland came through with a great win. I went to school in Payette and now live in Fruitland. I was hoping for a closer game than that. I'd love to see those boys in Payette do better. They bust their butts just like everyone else and they deserve recognition and support. Those Fruitland boys proved that they want it! I hope people figure out that if you can't back up the trash talk its better to keep your mouths shut. No one should take the wins away from any of these boys. They work hard at practice every day and have earned their wins. People need to class it up a little bit. What are you trying to teach your kids?! I don't care if Fruitland and Ontario play each other. I think it would be a fun game to watch, especially because the boys on each team want to prove something. It won't happen until the AD in each school get's it done so there's no point in ranting about it. No one knows what the outcome will be until it happens, so there really is no point in talking trash. We are all going to think "our" boys would take the game so what's the point in flapping our gums all day? "

" Whats up with the fuss in not playing Fruitland? Half those guys' dads are Ontario transplants. We didn't even consider Fruitland on our schedule during the 80's. It would of been an ambulatory nightmare at Holy Rosary. "

" The football team had fund raisers to pay for the trip to lakeland. The kids enjoy the long trips, and it is a good experience for them. Ontario has always had to travel long distances for their games. It is an advantage during playoff time. "

" You really shouldn't point any fingers in this situation. Now I dont think that it was handled in the best way possible but, how can you know that it was even anyone from Fruitland that did it? I personally think Ontario was tired of a smaller school kicking there butts every year. "

Yeah, they got sticky fingers over there, bunch of dirty rats in fruitland. "

" I agree with people that it would be very promising to see either Fruitland or Weiser on the schedule again. But, if the administrators can't get these games made, we can rant and moan all we want. I am not so sure how much of a positive it would be though. The last time Weiser and Fruitland played the Tigers, Ontario was a really bad team suffering from injuries and extreme youth. Now, the games would surely be more competitive.

I also agree that the expense of long travel may not balance with the benefits received, but it is good practice for state playoff games, as has been stated earlier.

I support "A.D. Wilson's" decisions and hope that "Coach Wilson" can keep his players focused and out of trouble for the remainder of the year.

Go Tigers!!! "

schedule, and Payette has not played Ontario for 40 years.Be nice to see a
game with Pendleton or Hermiston. Bring back a taste of IMC days. "

" Maybe Ontario should try and play some 5A schools in the Boise area. That would be some good prep for them every football season. "

Tiger Alum wrote on Oct 14, 2008 8:11 PM:

" I'd have to agree with Idaho HS FB. It doesn't make sense for Wilson to schedule games against Lakeland, The Dalles, etc. for a couple of reasons. Think of all the money that is being spent on these trips that could be spent elsewhere throughout the school district. It makes no sense for him to book these games when there seems to be much better quality teams here in the treasure valley. Imagine what a game say against Fruitland would do for both communities. We all want to see it, so therefore think of all the revenue that either or both schools could bring in from ticket sales. Additionally if these are truly the best teams in the area wouldn't both teams benefit from this tough fought battle? The town of Ontario wants to raise taxes to increase a budget to improve the schools...maybe they should start by realigning and prioritizing the expenses of the current budget before we decide to increase their budget. "

" Ontario and Weiser play in Ontario in week 2. Weiser finally agreed to schedule Ontario again. We'll see what happens. That's the only option Ontario has for a local game besides Vale. Nyssa dropped them next year and actually tried to get out of this year's game. The 4A schools in Southern Idaho won't schedule them. Middleton dropped their game. Columbia dropped their game. Payette won't play them. Payette only plays 2A schools for non-league. Homedale does the same, as does McCall. Lakeland is coming here next year for the second half of the home and home so it works out good. .As for Ontario vs Fruitland... don't hold your breath. Fruitland never traveled anywhere last year until the championship game. Their lack of road experience probably cost them the game. So, long trips in season are not a negative thing nor a bad thing. A local team could not provide that kind of a tune-up. Ontario knows that they will have to travel 400 miles for play-off games, so learning how to do it successfully is important. "

Idaho HS FB Fan wrote on Oct 14, 2008 12:22 PM:

" Ontario doesn’t have to make long road trips to play good Idaho teams. They have neighboring Idaho Schools that can give them a tune up game. Oh ya, the last time Ontario played Fruit and Wei both of these Idaho teams beat Ontario by huge margins. So Ontario, keep traveling long distances to find Idaho teams that you can beat.... "

Joseph wrote on Oct 13, 2008 3:10 PM:

" Fruitland hasn't lost to Lakeland, they've never played each other. Grizzlies are undefeated, thus far. However, I would imagine that Lakeland would likely beat Fruitland if they were to play. They are a big, strong team. They gave Nampa all they could handle earlier this year. Nampa was lucky to come out with a win in that game. No way Fruitland would even compete with Nampa. "

" Great job Ontario. Tough road trip. I don't care if Lakeland isn't as tough as in past years. That is a long raod trip! Also Payette Alum.. You are CLUELESS and just trying to start trouble. Again dumb parent showing our youth how to do the wrong thing!!! "

OHS fan wrote on Oct 13, 2008 12:32 PM:

" I hate to stick up for Fruitland, but they haven't played Lakeland, nor have they lost a game. Lakeland is a large school and they do have one win. I believe they defeated Timberlake High School. Timberlake is a 3A school like Fruitland, but they are not Fruitland. Lakeland is a large 4A school. In Oregon, they would be 5A. They were big and had a terrific power running game. Kudos to the Tigers for a great win 400 miles from home. That's a great tune-up for the league season and the playoffs. good luck vs Baker this Friday night! "

Jayson wrote on Oct 13, 2008 10:35 AM:
