Vale netters cruise to sixth straight victory By Ray Rodriguez Argus Observer Vale—Brooke Hawkins notched 10 assists, Janessa Cooper added 11 digs and the Vale volleyball team won its sixth straight match over Nyssa in Eastern Oregon League volleyball action Thursday in Vale. The Vikings kicked off the night in stellar fashion with a 25-13 win in the opener and kept the momentum going with a 25-11 decision in the second game. Vale completed the impressive sweep over the shell-shocked Bulldogs in the third game with a 25-10 win. Chloe Winters added nine digs and posted solid numbers from the service line, going 14-of-14 with seven service aces. Standout Kayla Voorhees also dominated from the service stripe going 19-for-20 with nine aces. Amy DeLong added six kills and three blocks, Shelby Mooney dropped five kills, Daishel Clark dished up five assists and Joslyn Noland did solid work at the net with three blocks of her own. Even with the win, Vale’s Hall of Fame head coach Mary Ann Standage was not pleased with her teams’ kill percentage. “Our kill percentage has got to improve. We’re not a big team, so we have got to target our attacks,” Standage said. “We have to find the holes in their defense, pass well on offense and do things quick. We’re just not there yet. All season, we will have a huge number of attacks but not a huge number of kills. We have got improve that part of our game.” Nyssa’s Victoria Rodriguez led with two kills, Katie Booth chipped in nine assists and two aces and Tori Armenta doled out eight digs. Vale (10-5 overall, 5-1 league) hits a tough stretch during homecoming week with a home date against Fruitland Monday, and they travel to Burns Thursday. Thursday’s match kept Nyssa (0-6 league) off the league win column where they look to change their standing at home Thursday against Grant Union.
