Fruitland—Brandon Eversole scored two goals, Jessy Solis added three assists, and the Weiser soccer team notched four second-half goals in its 4-1 win over Fruitland in Snake River Valley Conference boys soccer action Tuesday on senior night in Fruitland.

The lone Fruitland goal came in the first half on a score by Fruitland’s goalkeeper Travis Stice. Stice made a save and reared back for a goal kick. The boot flew high in the air and took two bounces over the outstretched arms of Weiser’s goalie Ruben Ruiz. Stice’s rare goal gave Fruitland a 1-0 advantage, which they maintained through the first half.

Weiser came to life in the opening moments of the second half, with Eversole scoring his first goal on an assist by Solis. One minute later, Manuel Ruiz added a score on another assist by Solis, and Weiser regained the lead at 2-1.

The two goals set the Grizzlies back on their heels for the rest of the game.

“They didn’t play well in the first half. They played like individuals,” Weiser coach Kathy Bokides said. “In the second half, they started to set each other up and played as a team.”

With 15 minutes left in the contest, Q Erhard notched a goal on a helper from Eversole, and Eversole finished off the deal with a goal, his 20th of the season, to provide the final margin.

“It feels great to get the win,” Eversole said. “We didn’t play our best game, but it will be good to go into districts with a win. In the second half, the biggest difference was we started talking more and playing well as a team.”

Ruiz made 11 saves, and Fruitland’s Stice added 24 saves in a losing effort.

“We played a great first half, but did not play well in the second half. We haven’t been able to put two halves together, which has been sort of our story all year long,” Fruitland coach Emilio Carbajal said.

Weiser (11-2-3 overall, 4-2-2 league) and Fruitland (1-12 overall, 0-8 league) kick off district action Saturday in Weiser.

Stephanie Rule notched a game-winning goal,  Laura Jones pitched a shutout and the Fruitland soccer team defeated Weiser 1-0 in Snake River Valley Conference girls soccer action Tuesday in Weiser.

The win propelled the Grizzlies into a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Payette and Weiser.

After a rough and tumble first half, Rule was able to get Fruitland on the board, taking a pass from Ashley Finch and putting her shot in the back of the net.

“It was a tough game,” Fruitland coach Frank Teunissen said. “Weiser, they looked good. They hustled, passed well and they are well coached. Our defense played a real good game. Laura Jones played a good game and so did their goalie.”

Fruitland (5-3-2 overall, 5-1-2 league) kicks off district action Saturday. The first game is slated between the No. 4 and No. 5 seed at 10 a.m. The No. 2 and No. 3 seed kick off at noon and the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 game starts at 2 p.m. versus the No. 1 seed.
