Ontario—Last year the Treasure Valley women’s soccer team just missed making the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges playoffs, but that setback has this year’s team focused on exceeding last year’s finish.
“We did not have to start over this season. We are building on what we did last year,” TVCC head women’s soccer coach Ryan Masingill said.
Building on what the Chukars did last year has paid off for the Chukars, as they currently find themselves ranked sixth in the NWAACC polls.
TVCC has been climbing in the polls each week and are up from seventh place a week ago. The Chukars are sporting a 7-3 conference record and look to improve on that mark with a pair of games beginning Friday, when Southwest Oregon comes to town for a 2 p.m. start.
Then, on Saturday, the Chukars will host No. 7 Lane Community College at noon.
Masingill said he has brought in some very talented freshmen to compliment the returning players.
“I like to look at the classes as two year projects, and this is year-two for the freshman class of last season. This is a super mature group of girls. They start practice on their own, they warm up on their own and they are very proactive.”
Sophomore defender Rachael Collins said, “I love this team. It is great to be a part of this team. We have really good chemistry this year, and hopefully we will make it to the playoffs. Last year we were really close. So our goal is to make it this year.”
Does this year’s squad have what it takes to make the postseason?
“This year’s team has a different attitude, and we have a bigger roster this year. The talent is better than last year. This year, the entire team believes we can make it to the playoffs.”
Collins said both the offense and defense of the women’s soccer team is strong, and this year the defense is much improved from a season ago.
“The sky is the limit. I think we can do whatever we want to,” Collins said. “We have a really good program.”
