Vale—Shelby Mooney dropped eight kills and Kayla Voorhees added six digs, and the Vale volleyball team worked an easy three-game sweep over New Plymouth Tuesday in non-league volleyball action in Vale.
The Vikings started out strong with an opening game 25-17 win, and battled the pesky Pilgrims in the second game with a 25-23 win.
Up 2-0, the Vikings lowered the boom with a 25-17 win in the third game to send New Plymouth packing.
“We played fairly well, I thought. We did a good job defensively,” Vale head coach Mary Ann Standage said. “Defensively, we’re pretty quick, so we can keep the ball in play and try not make many mistakes. We’re young, but were getting better every time out and it shows.”
Chloe Winters chipped in seven kills, Brooke Hawkins added nine assists and Janessa Copper tallied six digs.
The Vikings did most of their damage from the service line and were led by Daishel Clark, who went 13-of-13 with six service aces, and teammate Amy DeLong added a 12-of-12 effort with five aces.
For New Plymouth, Lauren Burnside threw down six kills and notched three blocks. Teammate Adia Campbell dished up seven assists, and Sienna Edmunson and Michelle Hull bumped up 10 digs apiece.
A lethal mix of homecoming and plenty of hardwood action raised a little bit of concern for New Plymouth head coach Paula Leppert.
“We were pretty flat tonight,” Leppert said. “We have been playing a lot of volleyball lately plus it’s homecoming, so I could see we’re getting a little tired.”
Leppert is optimistic her team will turn it up late.
“We’re trying to start to pull things together for the late part of the season and for districts,” Leppert said.
Vale (5-5 overall, 1-1 league) hits the road at John Day for a league showdown Thursday against Grant Union, while New Plymouth (2-9 overall, 0-6 league) travels to Marsing Tuesday.
