Union County plans Mt. Emily land buy

LA GRANDE (AP) — Union County is going ahead with plans to buy 3,700 acres of land on Mount Emily and manage it for natural resources and recreation, but may keep only about a third of the timber.

The three-member board of commissioners voted unanimously Monday to pursue the $4.65 million purchase from Forest Capital Partners.

If the deal is successful, the county will retain ownership of the land for the proposed Mount Emily Recreation Area, but will own only one-third of the timber.

The county would have the option of buying one or more of the timber units.

Union County had planned to buy all the timber, but officials said the $7.8 million price tag was too steep without an additional state grant or other funding.
