Branch looking forward to stretch run

Argus Observer Sports Staff

La Grande—Although her volleyball finished 1-9 at the La Grande Volleyball Tournament, Ontario High School coach Katie Branch saw some inspired play from her girls.

She also sees a bright future for her upstart Tiger netters as league play moves forward.

The lone Ontario win came in pool play, where they squeaked past Columbia High, out of Nampa, with a 24-23 win.

The pool play matches were played with a time limit, or ended when a team scored 25 points.

Among her long list of inspirational players, Branch noted the efforts of senior Jordan Barnett, who switched positions for the weekend tournament and libero Isabel Feibert, who Branch said continues to play at a top level.

“We switched up the rotation and Jordan Barnett played setter. She really did a good job. She fit the role perfectly and put it together for us. I was really happy with her,” Branch said. “Isabel Feibert, my libero, she’s one I wish the other girls would look up to to see how the game is played. She is focused 100 percent, the entire time back there. She has been huge for me in the back row getting a hand on things all the time. I appreciated her effort today, she played very hard.”

League play continues Tuesday and Thursday with road dates at Baker City and La Grande, and Branch saw a glimpse of what her team can do.

“It showed me they can play hard. It’s about getting them prepared, seeing if they step it up when the game is on the line and get them mentally tough enough for the whole match. We’re there, we just got to get it into our heads that we can accomplish it. We go to Baker and La Grande this week, so I hope they are ready to step up and play hard for the rest of the season. We’ll see how it goes, but overall I know we can do it.”

" I know Coach Branch, and I also know that she is a good person, and a great coach/teacher of the game. I agree you never really hear any negitive things when a team is winning. I have seen the Tigers play many times both this year and the past few years. I have watched and listened VERY close to coach Branch. I think some of the problem is with the players. Do they REALLY listen to what coach says? Do they really "buy" into what she is teaching/coaching? I have seen/heard her ask them do to things on the court...only to have the girls NOT do it, or even try to do it. Also I feel a HUGE problem for this team and coaching staff is that in the past the Tiger Volleyball team never had "coaching" they had a person sitting on the bench with them, but he did not act as a coach/teacher..lets face it, the girls ran the team the last few years. Now they have a Coach/Teacher of the game and some sturcture. This is all new to them. And we all know learning something new is not always easy and it takes time. The Tigers do have strong players and are a good team. EVRYONE (Coach-players-parents) need to step back and see the BIG PICTURE, get on the same page. Yes its nice to win, but at the same time I know Coach Branch loves the game of Volleyball and loves Coaching, I hope the players love the game and love to play...and I REALLY hope all you parents LOVE to watch you kids play and be involved in something that they LOVE, even if they don't win. My daughter would give anything to play the game she loves, but physically she can't any more, and I as a parent would LOVE to see her play again...winning or not! Keep your heads up Coach Branch, Tiger Volleyball Teams and Parents...and even Grandma and Pa! "

" This has nothing to do with parents wanting their kids in the game! It is about winning with the strongest players on the court. Come see for yourself. "

" Wow it is no wonder that the Ontario volleyball team is having such a bad year. The coach has no support. Plus every mommy and grandma in Ontario is blogging that their little princess should get in the game and never come out - after all she is the best. "

" I agree! Get your strongest players out there. You are looking at a sweep on Tuesday if you do not. Baker will eat those weak girls for lunch. "

" It is sad to see the amount of negativity that occurs from the coach on the court. I can only assume that it also occurs in practice. You can only tear down the girls so long before they will just give up. Sure the game is mental, but it is so much more than that. Barnett, Feibert, and Babcock are out there giving everything they have, but when you don't have the best players out there, it doesn't matter. They can be the strongest team mentally, but YOU obviously don't get that it is more than that!!! Start looking at yourself and your coaching tactics before the girls who once loved volleyball begin hating it and stop trying. "

" Coach! You have to play your strongest players. Feibert X 2, Babcock, Hopper, Barnett, Reever and Babij. The other girls on your team I am sure are great kids, but cost you points and games everytime they are in. You need to play to win not to make friends. You will have the support if you do this. "
