Panthers shut out Nyssa

Argus Observer sports staff

Nyssa

Parma High School sure knows how to crash a party.

The Panthers racked up 363 yards of offense and held Nyssa to 10 yards rushing in its 35-0 shutout win Friday in Nyssa, spoiling the debut of first-year head coach Lee Long.

Dalton Koplin rushed for 151 yards and three first-half scores and the Panthers broke open a 7-0 lead with 21 second quarter points.

“We had one bad quarter. Parma scored once in the first quarter and scored once in the second half. The second quarter is when it all just fell apart,” Long said. “Obviously there were some mistakes, but the kids can’t stop fighting for a play.”

Parma quarterback Rance Portenier returned to the starting lineup from a knee injury with 121 yards passing and a rushing touchdown.

“The one thing is, we got Rance back. He gave us quite a start,” Parma head coach Greg Asbury said.

Nyssa garnered 82 total yards and were led by quarterback James Larsen, who went 12-for-24 for 72 yards and an interception.

Parma (1-1 overall) has a bye week and faces 0-2 Homedale Sept. 19. Nyssa (0-1 overall) travels to Baker City Friday.

Adrian      48

Harper      36

In High Desert League action Friday afternoon in Harper, the Hornets were victimized by an air attack from the arm of Adrian’s Blake Ishida to the tune of 328 yards and six scores as the Antelopes opened their 2008 campaign with a 48-36 win over Harper.

Add in 159 rushing yards and Adrian compiled 487 yards of offense to begin the year.

The Antelopes scored the first 14 points of the game with a 14-yard and 15-yard pass plays — both to George Ellsworth — and led 14-0 to begin the second frame.

Harper's Steven Casiano honed in on Ishida and picked off a pass, then returned it 60 yards for Harper's first score of the game.

But that did not hinder Ishida, as he answered with his third touchdown pass of the game on a 25 yard hook-up with Ellsworth.

The point-after-attempt failed, but the Antelopes led 20-6.

The Ishida/Ellsworth connection struck again before the half, this time for a 35-yard score. Adrian added the two-point conversion and lead at intermission 28-6.

The Hornets came out of the break and found pay dirt first on a 20-yard interception return by Andrew Harper, Ussepe Vargas caught the two-point conversion to close in on Adrian’s lead, but still trailed  28-14.

Adrian answered with a resounding response by scoring on a 90-yard touchdown pass from Ishida to Levi Jones.

Adrian added 14 more points in the fourth quarter, while Harper found some offense in the final frame, and put up 22 points, but it was too little too late for the Hornets, losing 48-36.

Adrian will host Dayville/Monument Sept. 19.

Harper will be in action at 2 p.m. Friday as it hosts Jordan Valley in HDL action.

Jordan Valley’s Josh Deen led the team in rushing with 81 yards on 27 carries.

Defensively, Mustang Brandan McKenzie led his team with nine solo tackles, three assists and  a sack.

Mustang quarterback Alek Quintero was eight for 11 and 128 yard in the air.

Tyler Farrar rushed 20 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns and the Council Lumberjacks rattled off 431 total yards in their 36-22 win over Rimrock Friday at Lumberjack Field in Council.

Council broke open a 14-14 second quarter tie with three straight scores, using a 10-yard run by Farrar, a 15-yard catch by Farrar and a 2-yard plunge by Bo Green to run the score to 36-14.

The Raiders scored a meaningless fourth quarter score by Ricardo Araujo, but Rimrock could climb no closer.

Keith Heil went 12-of-17 for 132 yards and Green added 100 yards rushing and 63 receiving in the win.

“The running game got back on track this week. We were doing a better job of blocking. They are starting to gel as a group,” Council head coach Dan Shumway said. “We need cut down on the turnovers. We had three of them and that’s too many. We will keep addressing it as we keep going.”

Council (1-1 overall) has a bye week and hosts Tri-Valley on Sept. 19.
