Weiser netters get five-game win over Baker

Argus Observer Sports Staff

Baker

Playing without defensive specialists Paloma Puig and Cori Martin, the Weiser volleyball team gutted out a dramatic five-game win over Baker Thursday in non-league volleyball action in Baker.

Weiser bolted out of the blocks with a 25-20 win in Game 1, using the solid net play of Mary Lancaster and Liz Richins, who had four kills apiece.

With the help of their tough serves and digs, the Bulldog offense was able to take advantage of Weiser’s unforced serving and hitting errors, and regained control with 25-11 and 25-16 wins in the next two games.

Things began to turn around in the fourth game with setter McKatee Mason receiving a dig off the block and sending the ball deep into the opposite Baker corner for a kill.

The momentum changed, and the Wolverines battled back with the serve.

Bernadette Moore started off with a service ace and four points in a row, and Lancaster added four service points and an ace to send the contest into a fifth game.

In the decisive fifth game, Baker led 6-3 until Richins and the rest of the team began to fight hard and not let a ball drop.

The motivated play of Weiser frustrated Baker into many errors, where they hit the ball out and into the net.

Richins kept the serve going and rattled off four points in a row to tie the score at 7.

After a twisted ankle put Meredith Clark out of the match, Moore, normally a libero, changed jerseys and entered action in the front row as an emergency substitution.

Lancaster was at the service line, and she skillfully placed, aced and won four points in a row to give Weiser an 11-7 advantage.

Up by an 11-9 score, Weiser kept digging Bakers’ hits and frustrated them with Carlie Palmer’s blocks and Ana Overgaard’s right side, cross-court hits.

With the score 12-10, Mason subbed in for Overgaard and served an ace, and three points later, Lancaster spiked a kill down the line to give Weiser the win.
