Carol was born Nov. 24 1937, to Ira and Florence Story in Nyssa. She went to be with her Lord, and Marvin, her beloved husband of 48 years on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the Vale Christian Church, with interment to follow in the Valley View Cemetery in Vale.
Carol lived at home where she was taken care of for the last year by son, Tony, and his wife, Tammy. In the end, there was additional help from other family members and Hospice. She passed away following an extended illness which took her from us too soon.
Carol went to school in Nyssa, where she met Marvin at a ball game. They were married in a double wedding ceremony with close friends Jim and Shirley Orthman on Oct. 1, 1953, at the First Baptist Church in Ontario. The couples honeymooned at a family ranch by Van near Drewsey.
Carol and Marvin settled in Vale where they worked hard, bought a farm, milked cows and raised children. Carol had many jobs during this period. She worked as a waitress at the Pheasant Grill and then at the Starlite Cafe. She pumped gas when the family managed the Priceless Gas Station and car wash for three or four years until 1973. She was proud that the regular carrier on Route 2 asked her to be his substitute at the post office because he knew she was a hard worker. Carol and Marvin were also milking cows, and farming 160 acres. When Carl Hedin retired, Carol became the regular carrier. She loved her customers whom she served with dedication until she retired after 25 years. Marvin and Carol slowed down a bit in 1979, when son, Alan, and wife, Dorothy, moved to the farm. Marvin and Carol bought a place outside Vale where she enjoyed landscaping and gardening. They took vacations to go fishing, always competing and having “friendly” wagers for first, largest or most fish caught. After she retired Carol began to make quilts. She was very talented and made many beautiful ones. She made a quilt for each child, and then one for each grandchild. Marvin built her a chest to store the quilts in. When Marvin had heart surgery, she nursed him back to health. When Marvin developed cancer she cared for him at home with the help of daughter Susan at the end. She took it very hard when her love, Marvin, passed away and a year later moved to Ontario. She moved back to Vale, two years later to be closer to family and friends at church.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ray, Don and Wayne Story; and her husband Marvin.
She is survived by her sister Jean Oslowski; daughter, Susan Thaler, Crescent City, Calif.; sons, Alan (Dorothy) and Tony (Tammy), Vale; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Mary, the hospice nurses and all others who helped in the care of our loved one up to the end. Any donations may be made to the Vale Christian Church.
