The Payette Pirates and the Weiser Wolverines boys soccer teams opened the regular season with a Snake River Valley Conference game at Weiser High School Tuesday.
In a hard fought contest, it was the Pirates coming away as the victors with a 3-2 win.
Payette fired off 25 shots on goal in the win.
“I think the defense played good in the first half, but they did not do so well in the second half,” Weiser head coach Kathy Bokides said. “On offense, we passed the ball well, and their goalie did an excellent job.
“This was our first game of the season, and we have to learn to communicate and play together.” Bokides said. “Our defense has a lot of talent, but they will have to play together. We just have to pull it all together.”
The coach said both McCall and Payette will be tough.
“Payette can control the ball very well, and they maintain possession, and they have a great goalie. We are excited and the SRV is going to be tough this year.”
In girls’ action, Payette and Weiser ended in a 2-2 tie.
Weiser scored the first two goals of the game, forcing Payette to come from behind.
“We had our opportunities, but we did not close the deal,” Payette head girls coach Gordon Peterson said.
Despite finishing last year’s season with a third place at state, Peterson said he has a young team that still has a lot learn.
“There are high expectations for these girls, but they know they are not where they need to be,” Peterson said. “I was not disappointed in their performance.”
Saturday, the Weiser boys will be in action at 1 p.m. in Emmett, and the Payette boys will travel to Orofino for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
In girls’ action, Payette will also travel to Orofino with its game beginning at 1 p.m., while the Weiser girls will host Emmett Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
