Payette Lady Pirate netters hold off New Plymouth

NEW PLYMOUTH—For something that could have been devastating for a young team, the Payette volleyball squad rallied for a 3-1 win over the Pilgrims Tuesday in New Plymouth.
After winning the first two games, 25-18, 25-19, the Pirates, with three underclassman starters, suffered a tough 25-15 loss on the road.
Instead of allowing New Plymouth to keep the momentum, the Pirates held tough, for a 25-16 match victory and a win for the night.
“We got a little complacent,” Payette head coach Suzie Burley said. “It was something that we had to work through.”
Payette kept the Lady ’Grims from going on long scoring runs during the matches, which led the Pirates to the win.
“We just let down,” New Plymouth head coach Paula Leppert said. “We were getting tired and not talking. A lack of intensity was a big part of it.”
The Pirates charged out of the gates, scoring the game’s first five points, and never looked back.
After New Plymouth scored a point to bring the tally to 5-1, Payette never let the game get closer than four points again. Payette kept scoring points, and limiting the damage New Plymouth inflicted to a single points at a time, until New Plymouth’s Amanda Brown recorded a kill to bring the score to 15-8.
Lauren Arnzen served for two more points for the Pilgrims, but it was to little relief because Payette scored three more points for an 18-10 lead.
From that point, the game was pretty much even until Payette finished off the game by taking advantage of an unforced error from New Plymouth.
In the match, Payette sophomore Ali Bond led the Pirates with seven kills, while Lauren Manser led all players with six blocks.
Terra Knighten and Mary Hershey recorded double-digit digs with 15 and 12 respectively.
For the Pilgrims, Sienna Edmunson recorded 14 kills and 12 digs, while Michelle Hull had 11 assists in the loss.
Payette collects the win to move to 1-0 on the season, while New Plymouth (0-1) plays host to Homedale Monday.
