Twins keep close in A.L. central; Brewers want call overturned

Dino Vournas | Associated Press Minnesota Twins’ Justin Morneau is greeted at home by Nick Punto after hitting a three-run home run against the Oakland Athletics in the sixth inning of an MLB baseball game, Sunday in Oakland, Calif.
Oakland — (AP) Justin Morneau homered and drove in four runs, Scott Baker (8-4) won for only the second time since the All-Star break and Minnesota beat the Athletics to earn a split of the four-game series.

Alexi Casilla also homered and Nick Punto added two hits, including an infield single that sparked the Twins’ five-run sixth inning.

Mariners      6

Indians      4

At Cleveland, Adrian Beltre homered twice and Seattle beat the Indians to complete a sweep.

Ryan Rowland-Smith (4-2) allowed two runs — one earned — and seven hits over 6 1-3 innings.

Roy Corcoran walked three in a shaky ninth but finished for his second save.

Brewers     7

Pirates      0

Pittsburgh — (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers want CC Sabathia to be awarded the first retroactive no-hitter in major league history.

After Sabathia tossed a 1-hitter on Sunday in which the only hit was an infield single that could have been called an error, the Brewers vowed to send a DVD of the play to Major League Baseball, asking that the call be overturned.

Phillies      5

Cubs      3

At Chicago, Jayson Werth hit another home run against the Cubs and 45-year-old Jamie Moyer (12-7) got his 12th win, helping Philadelphia salvage a split of their four-game series.

Werth hit a two-run double in the first and a solo drive in the fifth for his 21st homer of the season. Werth, who went deep twice and drove in four runs in Philly’s 5-2 win Saturday, is 11-for-21 with four homers and 10 RBIs against the Cubs this season.
