ELK CITY (AP) — Some residents of a small mountain town in northern Idaho are worried a proposed gold mine could threaten not only their way of life, but their drinking water and environment.

The town, however, is still hurting after a sawmill went out of business. Some say the gold mine will bring new jobs to Buffalo Gulf, a sparsely populated town outside Elk City, Idaho.

On a ridge above Buffalo Gulf, the Elk City Mining Co. plans to dig about 200 feet deep so they can extract an estimated 100,000 ounces of gold.
