Pirates set sail against Chargers
Payette hosts 2A Cole Valley at 7 p.m. Friday

PAYETTE ” Both teams were able to take a look at what each other had to offer, without having to actually play against each other.

Each Payette and Cole Valley Christian saw what each others strengths and weaknesses were last weekend at the Homedale Jamboree.

Tomorrow night, these teams will match up against each other, to see what team did the better job at scouting out the other team.

On thing Payette coach Troy Gleave noticed about Cole Valley, was the size of their lineman up front.

“They have a big front,” he said. “They have four or five guys over six feet tall and over 200 pounds. They have some big physical kids up front.”

Gleave said he watched Cole Valley match up against Weiser last Saturday, and was impressed how they did controlling the line of scrimmage.

Although he understands his team will have to play well to get a victory over the smaller 2A school, Gleave knows his Payette squad is ready to play.

“We are feeling pretty good, we are pleased with how we did Saturday,” the veteran head football coach said. “We are looking forward to stepping on the field for four quarters. We are at the point when we just want to play, play with the lights on.”

The Pirates will have a chance to do that, as Payette opens up the season against the Chargers, hoping to improve on their three wins from last season.

Gleave said the two biggest keys for the game are remembering their responsibilities on both sides of the ball, as well as getting their jitters out early, so his players can focus on what the team has worked on the first three weeks of practice.

“We have a great group of kids who are working hard and having fun,” Gleave said. “This is as close of a group as I have ever had here in Payette. Athletically they are as good of group as I have had.”

Gleave said this years team supplies their own confidence, and that comes from playing good.
