Estes looks good in rehab start
PORTLAND (AP) — Long-time major leaguer Shawn Estes pitched the Portland Beavers to a 2-0 shutout victory in the first game of a double header, but Salt Lake took the nightcap 6-3.
Estes is making his way back from a thumb fracture that landed him on the San Diego Padres' 15-day disabled list May 31st. He came within two outs of a complete game before getting relief help from closer Edwin Moreno.
The Beavers conclude their 2008 home schedule with games against Salt Lake tonight and tomorrow.
Volcanoes pulling away from Ems
KEIZER (AP) — Michael Ambort and Ryan Lormand had bases-loaded singles during a seven-run seventh inning as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes beat the Eugene Emeralds 9-4 in Northwest League action.
The Oregon teams were tied for the West Division lead Saturday night, but the Volcanoes have reeled off three straight wins over the Ems to take command of the race.
The Volcanoes got three hits from third baseman Conor Gillaspie, the 37th overall pick in this year's Major League Baseball draft.
Anderson back on the practice field
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Derek Anderson made his first appearance on the practice field since suffering a concussion in a pre-season game.
The former Scappoose High and Oregon State star did some throwing at the beginning of practice while wearing his helmet, and left the field once team drills began.
Coach Romeo Crennel says it's unlikely Anderson will play in Cleveland's pre-season finale.
