PARMA—A Nyssa man died Sunday afternoon in a one-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 95 near Parma.
According to the Idaho State Police, Arculano Rios, 53, Nyssa, died after the vehicle he was driving swerved off the road, rolled and came to a rest on its top. Two passengers in Rios’ 2006 Toyota — Annette Klein, 47, and a 14-year-old girl — were transported to Holy Rosary Medical Center with minor injures.
ISP said the accident began when a 2000 Ford pickup, operated by Matthew McBride, 26, Wilder and traveling south on U.S. Highway 95, lost firewood from the truck. At the same time, Rios was going north on U.S. Highway 95. Rios apparently spotted the wood and tried to avoid it and swerved, but his car careened off the road. The ISP are still investigating the incident.
In other public safety news: The Ontario Police Department officers were involved in a high-speed pursuit after a Portland man who police said was intoxicated refused to stop at a traffic stop last week.
Police said Brian Webring, 27, was arrested and charged with attempting to elude, reckless driving, three counts of recklessly endangering another, driving while under the influence of intoxicants, and driving with a suspended license Wednesday.
The chase began after police said Webring made an illegal U-turn on East Idaho Avenue near Goodfellow Street.
“The officer attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle,” OPD Capt. Mark Alexander said. “Initially he had been going eastbound then made the illegal U-turn and started going westbound.” Alexander also said Webring drove on the sidewalk on East Idaho Avenue near Southwest Fourth Street before leaving the sidewalk and continuing to the downtown area, then north before heading south of town.
“It got up to speeds of about 70 miles per hour,” Alexander said. “Which in town is pretty fast.”
After driving through a field near Southwest Fourth Street, Webring approached a dead end on East Island Road, giving OPD officers time to lay down a spike strip as he turned around. The spike strip, officers said, deflated two tires. Alexander said the vehicle was stopped near Southwest Fifth Street and Southwest Fifth Avenue.
“The driver of the vehicle was intoxicated,” he said. “And was not cooperative with officers and was tased. He suffered injuries from being tased and was taken to Holy Rosary (Medical Center). He was ultimately taken to jail.”
Alexander said Webring’s three charges of recklessly endangering another were garnered because there were two adult males in the vehicle, ages 23 and 18, and because he struck a police car as he exited East Island Road. Alexander said two of the four patrol cars involved in the chase were damaged but did not have an exact monetary figure at press time.
“One sustained some damage to the underneath when the suspect vehicle drove into a field,” Alexander said.
The second police vehicle’s turn signal was damaged after the officer used his patrol car to pin Webring’s vehicle near Southwest Fifth Street and Southwest Fifth Avenue. Alexander said Webring would not be charged for damaging the police car because the officer damaged the vehicle while attempting to block Webring in. OPD is also looking for more information about a blue/grey Ford pickup they said was involved in a hit and run in the 600 block of North Oregon Street at 9:42 p.m. Monday.
“A 1992 blue Ford pickup was struck in the door area by a blue/grey older Ford pickup, which continued south on North Oregon Street,” OPD Chief Mike Kee said.
Kee said the older pickup should have damage to the front passenger-side headlight area and that the vehicle was transporting various household items at the time of the accident.
