• The X Fest ’08 Battle of the Bands, featuring Dirty Rooster, Lollipop, Mortal Enemy, Abrupt Edge and Malachi, will kick off at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Knitting Factory Concert House, 416 S. Ninth St., Boise. Tickets are free.

Sunday showings will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 and Aug. 31. Friday and Saturday tickets are $28 to $38. Tickets for Sunday through Thursday are $21 to $29.

• “Macbeth” will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, Aug. 15, Aug. 19, Aug. 20, Aug. 23, Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival Amphitheater, 5657 Warm Springs Ave., Boise. Sunday showings begin at 7 p.m. Sunday and Aug. 24. Friday and Saturday tickets are $28 to $38. Tickets for Sunday through Thursday are $21 to $29.

• The Western Idaho Fair runs Aug. 15 through Aug. 24 at Expo Idaho, 5610 Glenwood St., Garden City. Advance tickets are $5, $3 for seniors and $2 for children ages 6 to 11 from www.idahofair.com until Aug. 14. Tickets at the gate are $2 more. Children 5 and younger get in free. Gary Allan will play at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19. Chicago will perform at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Corbin Bleu will begin at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21. The Temptations will play at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22. Concerts are free with fair admission.

• The True West Cinema Festival is underway at The Flicks, 646 Fulton St., Boise. “Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson” will be shown at 7 p.m. today. “A Season for Brooding” will begin at 2:30 p.m., “The Legends of God’s Gun” will begin at 4:45 p.m. and “Buster” will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. “Afraid to Merge” starts at 2:30 p.m., “James Castle: Portrait of an Artist” starts at 5 p.m. and “Remarkable Power” starts at 7 p.m. Saturday. A retro screening of “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” will take place at 2:30 p.m., short films will be shown at 4:45 p.m. and “To Die in Jerusaelm” will wrap up the event at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8.50 per film. An all-inclusive pass is $75.
