COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Local golfer Scott Masingill placed emphasis on getting off to a good start to contend for the U.S. Senior Open.
Masingill, teeing off from the 10th hole, bogeyed the first six holes on his way to a 9-over par 79 and wound up in 127th place after the first round at The Broadmoor East Course in Colorado Springs, Colo.
In all, Masingill posted 10 bogeys, seven pars and a birdie, finishing up a tumultuous front nine with a 5-over 41.
The main problem for Masingill was the par-4 holes, where he struggled with an 8-over par effort. Masingill hit 8-of-18 greens in regulation, hit 6-of-14 fairways and blasted an average drive of 307 yards.
After one day, Fred Funk leads the way after a 5-under 65, and John Cook is in second place with a 4-under 66.
Cook carded a 4-under 66, which was good for the clubhouse lead for most of the day until Funk birdied the 16th and 17th holes to go 6 under before three-putting the final hole and finishing at 5-under 65.
Funk had two birdies and an eagle on the first four holes of a spectacular round that was bogey-free until the 18th hole.
Four were tied for third place at 1 under: Morris Hatalsky, Eduardo Romero, Juan Quiros and Tom Kite.
