Ontario Field of Dreams team picks up first-ever World Series win

Argus Observer sports staff

Park City, Utah—The Ontario Field of Dreams softball team began play at the Triple Crown World Series Tuesday, and, so far, the team is batting .500 in the wins and losses columns.

Ontario opened the tournament against the Scottsdale Heat of Arizona, and despite a valiant effort, Ontario came up short losing 5-4. The game was knotted at four in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Heat were able to punch across the winning run with two outs in the seventh inning.

In the Field of Dreams’ second game of the World Series, they were matched up against the Colorado Wrath of Fort Collins, Colo. Ontario came away with a 3-1 win in six innings. The game was called due to the time limit.

During the first game against Scottsdale, Ontario’s Erika Hopper slid into home plate, taking out the Heat’s catcher, but in the process tore open her knee and, after Game 2, required 13 stitches to repair the damage.

“She asked to have it stitched up so she could keep playing,” FOD head coach David Hopper said. “So the doctor fixed her up and she will continue to play with the injury.”

During the World Series festivities, the teams exchanged gift bags with each other, and Ontario did their exchange with the Colorado Stars.

The gift bags the Field of Dreams gave out were courtesy of Amalgamated Sugar, Ore-Ida, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce the the Field of Dreams parents. Ontario will play two more games today. Hopper said he was proud of the way his team has battled on the field.

" I am a former Ontario resident, grew up and graduated from there. I still read the Argus to keep up on what's happening. I have to say, I cannot believe the bashing that goes on in these blogs. It's sad. I always loved Ontario while I was there, but now have children and quite honestly would never want to raise them there due to the small town mentality of many of the people there. There's enough gossip in this world without it going to these extremes. Why can't we stick to the old saying of "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Be proud of the accomplishments of these young ladies. They obviously are working as a team or they wouldn't be where they are today. Good job to the coach for putting in the time he does, spending time with his daughter, with the other girls...and helping them achieve what they have so far. Those of you who are supposed adults...and saying the rude things you say here...you all need to dig deep and learn to be more encouraging and grateful to those in this world who choose to take time out of their lives to help our young children today. "

" I am going to back up Coach Hopper on this. He has coached my daughter and I have a lot of respect for him. He cares about the girls and his entire heart is into his program. I agree with Hopper if you're attacking OHS kids whether it is his daughter or not, you need to not be a booster. For the record his daughter deserves to play or he would not have her there. "

" You better back off my pal Coach Hopper, you all want to know the stats of the games, but none of you want to get off your lazy BUTTS and try coaching yourselves. Hey why don't you try helping out by keeping the stats, then you'll know them for yourself and then you can start defending yourself against "your" padded stats. You hide behind "OHS booster" but everyone knows your the same parent that got upset during high school ball because your poor daughter (with an attitude) wasn't getting any playing time. I bet you've made the other OHS Boosters so proud!!! "

" who cares about hoppers daughter if she is good which she is, she plays if not she will not, what is it with the people in ontario, is it the fun gossip, how do you know the stats were padded, most of you do not even know what stats are. it just gives you something else or someone to talk about,if his daughter earns the right so be it and I believe she has for I have umpired many of her games and still do, leave these girls alone, find someone else in ontario to talk about "

" You girls are such hard working,
dedicated, and positive ball players!! What a season! While the majority of your peers were kicking back, probably in the shade, there you were, in the heat day in and day out. Your parents are as proud of you as I'm sure you are of them. Kudos to you, the coaches, parents, and community support. Have a great school year girls :o) "

" Maybe than this blog would have been a good time to list the stats and how the other girls did, if the Argus chose not to print the full story you submitted, (which I have no doubt that may have happened), then it would have been nice for you to print it in your blog. Why would anyone have to email you for it? Lets let everyone have a chance to read it in its entirety. "

David Hopper wrote on Jul 27, 2008 7:43 AM:

" Hey all. I'm sure I know who is proporting that I give padded stats about my daughter tho you were too cowardly to print your own name. That's simply not true.

But to the real news, the stats of each game, including hits, pitcher and catcher, etc., along with multiple pictures were submitted to the argus after each game. I can't control what is reported, so sorry about that. If anyone wants them, I'm happy to email them to you, but you would have to acknowledge who you are first.

As for the the 'first ever' the Dwyer/Ogawa Field of Dreams team of 2002 won the National Championship in their age bracket, which was huge. Don't let the headline take away from that!!

If you are really an OHS Booster and are going after student athletes and their performances or stats, you are not doing a good job of supporting our kids and should probably think of somewhere else to volunteer your time. "

OHS booster wrote on Jul 24, 2008 8:18 AM:

" Hopper needs to report to the Argus with news worthy information such as who pitched? who got the win? hits? defensive plays? and NOT exploiting his daughter each week, it was enough when we had to read his daughter made the All -Argus softball team with "padded" stats! "

What wrote on Jul 23, 2008 9:01 PM:

" So the headline says this is the first-ever World Series win for the Field of Dreams, but nowhere in the story does it follow up with that. I mean I, as a reader, harken back to the Dave Dwyer and Gordy Ogawa led Dreams that captured a national title in 2002 or 2003. Is this a different tournament? Or did the Argus sports staff bungle another story? "
