Park City, Utah—The Ontario Field of Dreams softball team began play at the Triple Crown World Series Tuesday, and, so far, the team is batting .500 in the wins and losses columns.
Ontario opened the tournament against the Scottsdale Heat of Arizona, and despite a valiant effort, Ontario came up short losing 5-4. The game was knotted at four in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Heat were able to punch across the winning run with two outs in the seventh inning.
In the Field of Dreams’ second game of the World Series, they were matched up against the Colorado Wrath of Fort Collins, Colo. Ontario came away with a 3-1 win in six innings. The game was called due to the time limit.
During the first game against Scottsdale, Ontario’s Erika Hopper slid into home plate, taking out the Heat’s catcher, but in the process tore open her knee and, after Game 2, required 13 stitches to repair the damage.
“She asked to have it stitched up so she could keep playing,” FOD head coach David Hopper said. “So the doctor fixed her up and she will continue to play with the injury.”
During the World Series festivities, the teams exchanged gift bags with each other, and Ontario did their exchange with the Colorado Stars.
The gift bags the Field of Dreams gave out were courtesy of Amalgamated Sugar, Ore-Ida, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce the the Field of Dreams parents. Ontario will play two more games today. Hopper said he was proud of the way his team has battled on the field. |
