Special to the Argus Observer

Ontario—Six football players from Malheur County have been selected to play in the 56th annual Shrine East-West football game to be held in Baker City at 4 p.m. (MDT) on Aug. 2. These players, Loren Stewart, Ontario, Luke Skerjanec, Vale, Cam Anthony, Vale, Dave Moreno, Vale, Bryson Sap, Ontario, and Kyle Rodgers, Adrian, recently attended a dinner with the Snake River Shrine Club at the Boulevard Grange Hall where they were honored for their accomplishments on the gridiron.

Andy Bentz, Malheur County Sheriff, was the guest speaker, and he directed an inspirational talk to the players and the Shriners.

These six athletes will begin their Shriner experience at Wilsonville, Or., the weekend before the Shriner football game, after visiting the Portland Shrine Hospital for Children. They  will be transported to La Grande where they will practice as teams for the game. On Friday, Aug. 1, the players will visit Baker City and view the window displays, prepared by parents and the city merchants, which honor each individual player.

In addition to the Baker City tour, the athletes will attend a barbecue at the Blue Mountain Conference Center, hosted by the Baker Oregon “Cow-belles.”

On game day, the festivities will begin with a Cattlemen’s breakfast in the Geiser-Pullman City Park, which will be followed by the annual Shriners parade on Main Street in Baker City.
