Pugilists pound it out in Ontario By Argus Observer Sports Staff Ontario — Just three months into running, the K.O. Rats Boxing Club, at a new location at 505 N.W. First Street in Ontario, owner Martin Castellanoz has seen his stable of young pugilists grow dramatically. Castellanoz has added two additional girls and a slew of young boys, all in an attempt to keep kids off the streets. The Nyssa native uses the message of hard work, making good choices and reflecting the community in a positive manner  — With respect. “Some of the kids have been here a few months, some for a few days and what a difference,” community member Josephine Lopez-Guzman said. “We see a big change happening here already.” The club is a non-profit organization and Castellanoz uses the help of assistant coaches Adan Lopez and Troy Burkett as guides for aiming local kids to greater heights. Some of the members include Ontario natives Vincent Hernandez, Miranda Burkett, Monica Cedillo, Payette’s Stephen Tompkins and Fruitland’s Jose Valero and many more. The group has grown to as many as 20-30 in just a short span. Another key boxer on hand was 2007 Ontario High School graduate John Lopez, who announced his plans to turn professional. Wednesday, Castellanoz’s crew squared off in a sparring session with Roman’s Boxing Club, which is a Caldwell-based organization. Over 50 community members, kids, parents and athletes were on hand to watch as these small wonders graced the squared circle. “Some kids can’t afford the tuition, but Martin overlooks this. I think it is key to get donations for this great cause. Any amount will help,” community member Loretta Keerins said. “With wraps, mouthpieces, shoes, the costs add up.” Castellanoz has plans for many boxing exhibitions, where his boxers will take to the mat against some of the best young fighters across Oregon and Idaho.
