Richard Ray ‘Dick’ Evans
June 1, 1934 - July 14, 2008

New Plymouth

Richard Ray “Dick” Evans, New Plymouth, died Monday, July 14, 2008, at his home from complications of a lengthy illness.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, New Plymouth. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2008, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Second Ward, New Plymouth. Interment will follow at Park View Cemetery, New Plymouth. Condolences may be made to the family at www.shaffer-jensenchapel.com.

Dick was born June 1, 1934, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Aaron L. and Ethel (Kesgard) Evans. He lived in Arimo, Idaho, until he moved with his family to Emmett and later to New Plymouth.

Dick started working part time at the age of 8 in a meat and grocery market.

He received the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He graduated from New Plymouth High School in 1952 and married Jerry Hayes that November. Together they have four children.

Dick held various jobs and lived in Payette when he was a salesman for Wells Davies Meat Packers, then moved back to New Plymouth to work at the Groceteria, being the store manager there 10 years before opening DJ Foods in 1966.

Dick and Jerry’s marriage ended but not their respect for each other as they continued to work at the store together.

Dick married Sally Wimpy in August of 1994 and took on the role of stepfather and grandfather to her children and grandchildren.

He was a big man with big heart and enough love for all, generous to a fault. Dick would exchange groceries for old beat up radios or such from families so they could have food to eat.

Dick enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, photography, cooking, family and work. He was a community minded individual who supported, participated and served. Over the years he was involved with Little League, Jaycees and Kiwanis. He served as trustee for the Congregational Church, as chairman of the Planning and Zoning Committee and a member of the chamber of commerce. He later served with honor in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as high council, high priest and nine years as single adult representative.

His parents; his in-laws, Harry F. and Faith Louise Wright and Rich and Bea Hayes; his brother; a niece; and a brother-in-law preceded him in death.

Dick is survived by his wife, Sally; his children, Janet (Bill) Warnke, Toni (Rob) Ziemer, Greg (Ginny) Evans, Kellie (Roger) Larsen; sisters, Gloria Murray and Jody (Charles) Darrall; sisters and brothers-in-law, John and Susie Dolphus, Dan and Pat Pero, Joyce Evans, Marian Packard and Fred and Carolyn Wright; his first wife, Jerry Evans; three stepchildren, Cindy (Dan) Whiteley, Kathy Hall and David (Trudy) Wimpy; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to Millie at Davita Four Rivers Nephrology, Heart ‘n Home Hospice and stepdaughter Cindy, who tenderly cared for him at the end.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette ID 83661.

As Dick would say, “HOLY MACINAW!”
