Ore. GOP candidate in wrong district, out of race

SALEM (AP) — Republican Jeff Duyck has been voting in Oregon’s House District 29 for seven years, and when he decided to get into politics and run for the Legislature, he filed to run in District 29.
That’s the district he lives in, officials at both the state and county level had certified. But Duyck has found he doesn’t live in District 29.
His house is 125 feet from the district line in northwest Oregon. He’s actually in District 26.
So, even though local and state officials had determined he was eligible to run from District 29, and even though he did nothing improper, he’s out of the race, Secretary of State Bill Bradbury ruled Friday.
State law requires a legislative candidate live in the district he or she runs to represent. It specifies that if a district line crosses a candidate’s property, the location of the candidate’s house determines the district the candidate is in.
