Eugene — So far, so good for the Treasure Valley ‘AA’ Stars.
Josh Mejia and Tyson Flannery each went 4-for-5 and the Stars kicked off the Papa’s Baseball Tournament with a 16-8 win over Three Rivers in American Legion baseball action Wednesday in Eugene.
The Stars opened things up with an early 6-0 lead after two frames and held as much as a 10-2 advantage.
Treasure Valley tallied a single run in the top of the sixth and Three Rivers added three runs to creep to within an 11-8 deficit heading into the seventh.
In the seventh, the Stars headed to paydirt with five runs to put the contest out of reach.
The cause to all of the offensive exploits?
The top of the Stars’ lineup.
Leading the way were Josh Mejia, Jay Sutton, Kyle Blackwell and Tyson Flannery, who combined to go 13-for-17 from the dish.
“That pretty much summed it up right there. Those four guys swung it really well today,” Treasure Valley head coach Aaron Sutton said. “We drove out here earlier this morning, so you would expect them to come out sluggish, but we got on them early, so that was good to see from them.”
Ryan Laubacher tossed 52⁄3 innings with six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Treasure Valley (19-10 overall) battled Oroville, Calif. at 10:30 a.m. MDT this morning in Eugene.
