Ontario—Even with nothing on the line, just your ordinary summer fun, the Fruitland High School volleyball team is in mid-season form.
Through three days of heated pre-season volleyball action, the Lady Grizzlies, led by Kylee Nawahine, Ashley Holt, Adia Campbell and Kelsey Lewis, made easy work of the field, sweeping through the competition taking top honors at the Treasure Valley Community College pre-season volleyball tournament Thursday at John J. Easly Gymnasium in Ontario.
Along with Fruitland, seven other schools made an appearance in Ontario, with high-powered programs Weiser, Vallivue, Baker City, Parma and Tri-Valley doing battle on the hardwood.
Horseshoe Bend finished in second. Vallivue was third, and Jerome chalked up fourth place honors. Baker City, Weiser, Parma and Tri-Valley rounded out the rest of the placers.
On the junior varsity side, Vallivue ended up taking the championship, while Baker City ended up in second place.
Many teams used the event as a way to shed the off-season rust, and coaches were given a glimpse of the future.
The event also gave the coaches a birds-eye view on what they needed to attack strategy-wise, and what roster holes need to be filled as they progress towards the regular season.
TVCC tournament co-coordinator Tricia Alvarez was happy with the turnout and, inturn, was impressed with the quality of play in three days of digs, serves and kills.
“I am thankful for all of the teams that participated and hope that the next tournament we host July 28 through 30 will run as well,” Alvarez said. “The other great thing about hosting high school tournaments is you get to see a lot of next years’ seniors, and it is easy to do some recruiting.”
On July 28, six teams, including Ontario and new head coach and Vale High School graduate Katie Branch, will make the trip down to TVCC.
Times and schedules are to be determined.
