Fishing Report

OREGON FISHING REPORT

MALHEUR RESERVOIR: On May 22 the reservoir was stocked with legal-sized (8-10 inch) rainbow trout. On May 29, the reservoir was stocked with fingerling (3 inch) rainbow trout. Water level remains below last year’s level at this time. It is slowly dropping as irrigation water is released. The reservoir continues to produce nice catches of 12- to 17-inch rainbow trout. The boat ramp is still in the water.

HELLS CANYON RESERVOIR: trout, crappie, bass, catfish

Very good angling for crappie, bass, perch and catfish. Crappie are running 10-12 inches.

SNAKE RIVER below HELLS CANYON RESERVOIR: steelhead, trout, salmon, smallmouth bass

The Snake River from Dug Bar boat ramp upstream to the deadline below Hell’s Canyon Dam opened for spring salmon angling on April 26. The daily bag limit is three adipose fin-clipped adult per day. Two jacks (less than 24 inches) may be kept in addition to the adult limit. Barbless hooks are required. Salmon angling is fair.

SNAKE

OWYHEE RESERVOIR: largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, black crappie, yellow perch, catfish -

The reservoir has started to drop. It was 63 percent full on June 15. All boat ramps are accessible. Angling for crappie is fair. Angling for bass is fair to good.

OWYHEE RIVER (Lower): brown trout and hatchery rainbow trout

rainbow trout - Angling for rainbow trout and brown trout is good. Catches of brown from 12 to 20 inches have been common. Rainbow trout are less abundant, but anglers have been catching some larger fish. Flow was 228 cfs June 15.

POWDER RIVER: trout, spring chinook - The Powder River from Hughes Lane Bridge in Baker City to Mason Dam is open for adipose fin-clipped spring chinook May 31 through Sept. 1, 2008. The daily bag limit is two spring chinook. These chinook have been released as surplus from the Snake River. Rainbow trout have also been stocked below Mason Dam.

WARM SPRINGS RESERVOIR: smallmouth bass, white crappie, catfish, perch, and hatchery rainbow trout - The reservoir has begun to drop. The reservoir was 42 percent full June 15. Inflows ranged from 140 cfs up to 250 cfs. Fishing is slow.

IDAHO FISHING REPORT

SNAKE RIVER: Channel catfish – Biggies have been biting recently. Cut bait and worms are both catching fish. Expect a lot of weeds in the river; Indian Cove is essentially not fishable because of weeds. Fish downstream from Loveridge Bridge. Smallmouth bass – Some nice bass are being caught below CJ. Use the same lures and techniques as mentioned above.

Sturgeon – Running a close second to the rainbow fishing. Fish and game Conservation Officer Brian Flatter saw seven fish landed in the middle of the afternoon on May 29 in less than an hour - including an eight-foot, six-incher he caught. Flatter said sturgeon fishing has been the best he has seen in years. He checked anglers on June 3 and fishing had not slowed down one bit. Most anglers are using pieces of fresh crappie for bait. Leave their braided line and stainless hooks at home. Flatter said he actually saw folks pack up and leave because they were exhausted by catching sturgeon.

Salmon - Fishermen hooked up with 11 adults and 349 Jack salmon last week  from the Dug Bar boat ramp to Hell’s Canyon dam.

BROWNLEE RESERVOIR: The reservoir is filling rapidly and should be full within the next two weeks. Smallmouth bass are scattered and fishing is spotty.

SALMON RIVER (Hammer Creek boat ramp to Little Salmon River) chinook salmon - During the week of June ninth, through June 15th, anglers caught 489 adult chinook salmon and 246 Jack salmon. (From the mouth of the Little Salmon River to Short’s Creek): During the same period, 1,278 adult chinook were caught along with 407 Jack salmon.
