Umatilla County law targets crimes in
unincorporated areas
PENDLETON (AP) — A new Umatilla County ordinance says landowners in unincorporated areas can be held responsible for crimes on their properties. The ordinance lets the county designate sites as ‘‘crime properties’’ if certain crimes or disturbances take place there over a 90-day period. The county then can notify the landowner and tenant before taking the owner to court, and charge any county expenses to the landowners.
Oregon man accused of killing dog
ALBANY (AP) — A Linn County man was jailed during the Memorial Day weekend on accusations he shot and killed a dog that wasn’t his. The sheriff’s office says neighbors complained that Brian Lee Powell used a rifle to shoot the dog named Dakota. Powell reportedly told authorities he thought he could shoot the dog because he lives ‘‘in the county.’’
But Deputy Matt Rae told Powell he had no such right, and the 48-year-old was charged with animal abuse and unlawful use of a deadly weapon.

High water slows ID fishing opener
BOISE (AP) — High river levels and fast moving water are keeping fishing enthusiasts away from Idaho’s rivers and streams.
Saturday was opening day, but anglers are going to have to wait a bit longer for conditions to improve. Record numbers of Chinook salmon are expected to be in the waters this year, but extremely cold water and high flows are pushing fish into areas where they are hard to find.
Economy slows golf course opening
NAMPA (AP) — A planned residential golf community course won’t open as planned this month because of a sluggish real estate market, say developers of Hunter’s Point.
The 18-hole private course was scheduled to open this month, but last week, owners Greg and Jeanette Bullock filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The course will still open to its charter members on a limited basis this summer, but with lot sales slumping, the course owners were unable to secure enough money for its scheduled pre-opening.
