Midvale track sends 10 athletes to 1A state tournament

Midvale—After a 37-medal winning performance at the Long Pin Conference Meet, the Midvale track team performed to a new high at the 1A District III meet during the weekend at Horseshoe Bend.

The eye-opening performance, pumped out 10 Ranger tracksters to state, with eight freshman, a sophomore and a junior making the strides.

The girls continued to prove that they belonged amongst the best by qualifying all three of their relays and five individuals.

Kelsey Doggett was the first of the five freshman girls to qualify by taking third in the high jump. Doggett also starts off all three legs of Midvale’s relays.

The girls 800-meter medley set a new mark with Alyssa Brown on the second leg.

Karly Craig ran third in the 200-meters, and Haily Sutton ran the 400-meters with a time of 2:04.9 earning them a trip to state.

Kyanne Hemenway took fourth in the long jump, and Craig qualified in the pole vault with a third place finish, and Brown beat the heat and earned top honors in the shotput. Hemenway took first in the triple jump with a district-best jump of 34-1, and the 4x200 relay team of Doggett, Craig, Sutton and Hemenway ran season best with a time of 1:54.6, beating the second place team by nearly four seconds. In the 4X100 relay, Brown stepped in for Hemenway and the group did not miss a beat, as Brown, Doggett, Sutton and Craig ran a 55.26, defeating the second place team by a full three seconds.

Hemenway finished out the girls showing by taking second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.4 seeding her sixth in state.

The boys did well with Ross Branch qualifying for state in the triple jump with the third best jump at 39-feet-8 inches. Branch also made the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The boys medley squad of Kannon Hemenway, Kevin Waters, Scott Jaeger and Ryan Stephens came up short in qualifying, but set a new mark at 4:08.8, eclipsing their previous best of 4:32.

Freshman Michael Lopez tied for fourth in the pole vault, earning the freshman a trip to state.

The boys kept performing at a high level of excellence by taking second in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:37, sending freshman Morgan Baladez, Jaeger and sophomore Hemenway to State with Branch, who also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash.
