Ontario—Local professional golfer Scott Masingill recently attempted to qualify at the Birmingham tournament in Sylacugua, Al., but a couple of mistakes sent him home. Masingill shot a 73, three stokes over the qualifying mark.
“I wasn’t planning on playing in this event, but my game is starting to show some signs of life, so I thought I would give it a whirl,” Masingill said.
Masingill played on a course called Farmlinks. According to the golfer, the course has an interesting concept, in that the course is used as a research and training site for different seed and fertilizer applications. The beautiful course has some 23 different strains of grass used on the fairways and tees.
Masingill said the course probably didn’t suit his game perfectly. Farmlinks played 7303 yards, and it had rained hard the day before the qualifier.
During the qualifying round, Masingill said he made one error that cost him two strokes or he would have been right in the mix. A ball he hit, picked up a bunch of mud in the middle of a par 5 fairway. The mud was right on the bottom of the ball, and Masingill thought that it would fly straight. He tried to knock a three wood on the green, but the shot went straight right and was lost. Masingill said he made a double bogey on the easiest hole on the course.
“I’m putting and chipping well, and that is a great start,” Masingill said. “My confidence is growing, but I still need to tighten up some things.”
Masingill said his iron game is not where he wants it to be right now, but with the weather getting better, he is looking forward to getting out on the course and putting in some work before he attends the TPC at Des Moines on May 27.
When asked about the Des Moines course, Masingill said he didn’t know anything about the course but added, with a couple of practice rounds on the links, he will have no problem with it. Masingill is still looking for his first qualification this season, and he said he is confident he will make the cut in the near future.
